Mitsubishi Lancer Prototype S Previews Sportback Model
Product diversification is a road down which many manufacturers are taking. And while rival Subaru tackles the mainstream market with its Impreza sedan and hatchback variants, it is Mitsubishi who are to evolve their 4-door Lancer concept with the addition of a 5-door sportback model. Born of the sportback concept car first shown at Frankfurt in 2005, these are the first official sketches of a near-production sports hatchback - the 'Prototype S'.
Leaking onto the 'net via a member on two Evolution X message boards, the Prototype S sportsback is said to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March but bar this tidbit of information, there are few details on the new model. Judging by its styling, expect specification to be close to that of the Evolution Ralliart, featuring a 240 hp 2.0-litre turbocharged engine linked to permenant all-wheel-drive, active yaw control and active centre differential.
"With its long wheelbase and wide track, it is clear that the design emphasis of the Concept Sportback is on performance and flexibility,” said Mitsubishi Motors Australia President and CEO Robert McEniry, speaking at the Concept-Sportback's Australian debut.
Stay tuned for more details and further official shots due ahead of its March debut.
