As we revealed back in September, Audi had been making plans to bring a 1.8 TFSI engine to the market.  The engine is now ready to go, with the German car company placing it as a candidate for the Audi A4 and Audi A5.

The new turbocharged engine generates 120 horsepower in the A4, and 170 hp in the A5.  A5 owners can get the engine paired with a continuously variable multitronic transmission, while A4 owners get the manual transmission.  Maximum torque exceeded expectations at nearly 170 lb-ft, with required engine speed needed to reach that potential at just 1500 to 3650 rpm.  With the new engine, the A4 goes 0-100 kmh in 10.5 seconds, topping out at 208 kmh.  The A5 improves on that significantly with a 0-100 time of 8.6 seconds, and a top speed of 218kmh.

Each vehicle has decent fuel economy, with the A4 burning 7.1 liters per 100 kilometers, and the A5 using 7.4 liters.

Both cars are now available for order.  Starting price for the Audi A4 1.8 TFSI is listed as €25,900, with the Audi A5 1.8 TFSI climbing to €34,900.

New engine versions for Audi A4 and A5

* 1.8 TFSI with various performance levels * High efficiency and sporty performance * Entry-level version for the Audi A4 line

Audi continues to expand its successful A4 and A5 model lines. The new entry-level units add to the range of available engines. The 1.8 TFSI engine is available for the Audi A4, where it generates 88 k (120 hp) in combination with a manual transmission, and for the A5, where it develops 125 kW (170 hp) in combination with the continuously variable multitronic transmission.

With a power output of 88 kW (120 hp), the 1.8 TFSI in the Audi A4 has proven to be an especially efficient version. The four-cylinder engine, which combines the technologies of turbocharging and gasoline direct injection, is offered with manual six-speed transmission and front-wheel drive. Maximum torque of 230 Nm (169.64 lb-ft), meanwhile, is reached at just 1,500 to 3,650 rpm. This enables fuel-efficient driving with fewer gearshifts.

The Audi A4 1.8 TFSI accelerates to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 10.5 seconds and has a top speed of 208 km/h (129.25 mph). Its average fuel consumption of 7.1 liters per 100 km (33.13 mpg) makes the four-cylinder unit an efficient engine. The Audi A4 1.8 TFSI can now be ordered starting at €25,900 (Attraction).

The Audi A5 is also offered now with either the 1.8 TFSI with manual gearshift or the continuously variable multitronic transmission. The maximum torque of 250 Nm (184.39 lb-ft) is available between 1,500 and 4,800 rpm. The high-revving gasoline engine handles the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 8.6 seconds and can achieve speeds of up to 218 km/h (135.46 mph).

The Audi A5 1.8 TFSI, with its continuously variable automatic multitronic transmission, unites ride comfort with superior driving performance and low fuel consumption – using an average of 7.4 liters per 100 km (31.79 mpg). The Audi A5 1.8 TFSI with multitronic starts at €34,900.

120bhp is gutless! That thing will struggle to pull a door closed.

its not that bad but it couldn't be better

This might be a mistake. Last time I heard about this engine it was rated at 170hp for A4. Why would they make a better one over the old 1.8T with less power, doesn't make sense. However it gets around 39 mpg. You may like it for this reason not for power. Tuners will have fan for sure.

It's obviously an error. The A4 1.8 TFSI engine has 118 Kw that is 160 bhp. The 1995 A4 1.8 engine (not supercharged) had 125 bhp

they should put the 1.4 TSI engine from VW can have 120bhp or 170bhp eh... but i'm not sure that vw is parted with vw hmm

Ditto. Even for such a big (and expensive) car.

They already put this engine on Passat B6 at China for serveral months. It rate at 160bhp!

by harcker | January 25, 2008 2:24 AM
agree.. the power figures are definitely misprints, the author needs to check their sources before posting.... and why would they bring the 1.8tfsi to market??? they already have the wonderful 2.0tfsi!! rediculous...

The 2.0 TFSI requires 98 RON fuel which is not available in most countries. The 1.8 TFSI is designed for 'world wide' deployment because it is optimised for 95 RON fuel. Where I live, we have to drive around to get 95 RON and you can forget 98 RON -It's not available at all.

The old 1.8 Turbo had 150 HP, so relasing such an engine with 120 HP would be a big step back

by afterace2 | January 25, 2008 11:21 AM
Ewww... I thought this ought to be a mistake and went for Audi's website, but there you go. 1.8 TFSI/120hp.

170hp makes for a nice entry model, but 120hp won't get this anywhere IMO. This still isn't a microcar.

by ceven | January 25, 2008 1:48 PM
lol why don't you like look at the audi website says 1.8 TFSI engine 160ps = 157BHP so yeah must be a misprint...

by mcwong | January 25, 2008 4:03 PM
It clearly isn't a factual error.

For instant enlightening check this: http://www.audi.de/audi/de/de2/neuwagen/a4/limousine/news/Neue_Motorvarianten_fuer_Audi_A4_und_A5.html

Umm... You guys gotta copy the whole link by double-clicking.

This engine is available in the A3. 160 bhp! A friend of mine used a chip to get 210 bhp.

by Discover | January 25, 2008 4:44 PM
It certainly is, but in case of the A4 it comes with 120hp standard.

by ceven | January 25, 2008 7:31 PM
Have you missed da torque question? Why can a 120cv be weaker than a older 150cv? Have you compared torque values?

I think, nowadays, a engine for all-round situations, should be, fast-response, joy to drive...economic!

I think 120cv with 230Nm is a way better! (as far as all round use is concerned)

by DogFalcon | January 25, 2008 8:16 PM
this is not a misprint - this engine is available in two forms: 120PS/230NM & 160PS/250NM and they will do 129/10.5 140/8.6 top whack and 0-100kph

by dom6698 | January 28, 2008 12:36 AM
just ordered one in 120hp but will bring it for chipping it's all in comp.soft. apparently .
