Quiet world premiere

Of course, most journalists had flocked to Detroit to witness and report on the biggest North American car show. No wonder that a Brussels Car Show world premiere has gone mostly unnoticed outside of the Benelux.

Two cars received special attention, the new Nemo Combi and the all new C5 saloon, which we had hoped to have seen at Frankfurt in September. The Citroen C5 is hoping to become a long-term leader in the M2 segment of mid-upper range saloons, ie Ford Mondeo, Renault Laguna and the upcoming Opel Insignia.

For the first time on the C5, since it uses the Citroen C6 running gear, it will be available with either the comfortable Hydractive 3 Plus suspension system or a metal suspension for a stiffer ride.

The Citroen C5 will be launched in spring 2008 and will be on offer with a wide choice of engines, both gasoline and diesel, uncompromising safety features and fancy technologies.

Just one day after Brussels was the presentation of the new C5 in Vienna, where I saw this car already! The design is, I think, the best in it´s class. But a little too expensive for a Citroen, I think. You can´t sell this at the same price as a VW Passat ....

Why not? They seem to have reached high quality standards (both in and out); it looks better than the Passat, especially the estate version which is outstanding, not to mention the striking interior. The handling is going to be superior too, especially with its sophisticated air suspension. The only drawback I see in respect to the VW would be the residual value on re-selling, assuming they've improved their overall reliability, as claimed by PSA's new chairman. On the other hand, I'm afraid it's going to cannibalize sales from the C6...

You have also to keep in mind their marketing politics are quite different. Citroen tends to display fat retail prices coupled with agressive dealer discounts and special offers, while VW-Audi is more conservative and got narrower dealing margins.

It is not a true citroen. It is a car like the others, so it will not be in the history like others citroen´s,

Looks nice and elegant but not sure to be as successful as Passat. First should try it in real life.
