Diesel prowess

Embargoes are like rules, they are meant to be broken. This time around Auto Motor und Sport in Germany have sent out their January issue to subscribers featuring a rendering of an Audi R8 Concept with V12 TDI engine article. The story is still under wraps by Audi until January 13 when it will make its world wide debut at the 2008 NAIAS in Detroit.

AMS calls the Audi R8 V12 TDI a study model, but depending on feedback the car might just make it to mass production (hand built mass production that is). The V12 TDI engine has made quite a name for itself on the track in the R10 race car and will be featured in the upcoming Q7 V12 TDI. It is a proven engine and will obviously not burn your R8 to a crisp.

Some numbers from the article. The Audi R8 V12 TDI produces 500 hp with 1,000 Nm of torque, 0 – 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, top speed lies over 300 km/h and fuel consumption is rated at 10 liters per 100 km. Disadvantage of the V12 TDI over the V8 is that the little trunk space is entirely gone due to the V12 size and it weighs 100 kg more too.

The front fascia is altered on the R8 V12 TDI because the engine requires more cooling, which is achieved through the larger airducts.

Thank you Thomas for the tip! More images at R8-quattro forum.

Truely ridiculous!

Who wants a diesel engine in a sports car?

I have driven diesels, and the small usable rev range drove me mad (now I own a wankel RX-8 that revs just beautifully).

by Herr.Bugno | January 4, 2008 12:19 PM
Why not? Just take a look at TDI engines of BMW and Mercedes's sporty cars. Everything is possible. What will you be driving when the all the fuel on the earth runs out? An electrical or hydrogen powered car?

by buozgs01 | January 7, 2008 1:01 AM
Ridiculous?...look at their R10 racecar, doesn't it have a diesel engine?..and yet it is one of the best race cars ever made!..come on man, it's not all about petrol anymore. Have you ever heard the engine of an Audi Q7 3.0 TDI V6?..or have you ever experienced the true power such an engine delivers?..I rest my case.

by car.fan | January 4, 2008 12:50 PM
Have you ever had to accelerate with a Diesel engine? First you have the Turbo-hole, then you have to shift every second because above 4000 revs, it feels like hitting a wall! Diesels may be nice for passenger cars, but shity for sportscars ...

by Herr.Bugno | January 4, 2008 1:00 PM
next step a ... DIESEL F1 car...but really now....a TDI in America ?!

by mKv | January 4, 2008 1:02 PM
Believe me, when it comes to Audi's, Turbo lag is very well regulated, and barely noticeable. If diesel is shitty for sports cars, the Audi R10 would not be amongst the best racing cars ever made :).

by car.fan | January 4, 2008 1:05 PM
Just like Ferrari or mclaren adapt their racing technologies into their road cars, Audi will do the same.

by car.fan | January 4, 2008 1:07 PM
The LeMans R8 Diesel was only successful, because a Diesel provides from it´s layout the best power/consumption ratio. Diesels are the most efficient engines, that I do not doubt! And no doubt you can adapt your drivingstyle to be quick in a diesel, but still it is no fun doing so!

The characteristics of a diesel engine are no good in a sportscar. Period.

by Herr.Bugno | January 4, 2008 1:11 PM
I will have to disagree with you yet again. Anyway...you have your opinion and I have mine :P...i'm gna stop contradicting you coz this is gna end up being an argument lol

by car.fan | January 4, 2008 1:14 PM
Yes you are right! :D Have fun driving your diesel on twisty roads! :P

by Herr.Bugno | January 4, 2008 1:28 PM
lool :P...i'm only 17..my dad has a diesel Q7 =P...but i drive it from time to time hehe

by car.fan | January 4, 2008 1:30 PM
Herr Bugno's sentiments on diesels are the exact reason that we'll never see such an amazing car on this side of the pond. Shame, really!!

by lonestarpng | January 4, 2008 1:30 PM
Hey, don´t blame me! ;-) And it´s not sentiments, its experience.

And who says that because of the concern for low fleet consumption, Audi will not bring the R8 TDI to the US anyway? I wish you fun driving it! :P

But right now I think the R8TDI is just a marketing trick to promote diesel engines in the USA! I don´t think Audi are serious about it ...

by Herr.Bugno | January 4, 2008 1:39 PM
diesel engines produce a lot of torque , right?

by marsman | January 4, 2008 1:51 PM
Yes, which is a good thing.

by car.fan | January 4, 2008 1:54 PM
Yes, especially for clutches, transmission and tyres! :-D

by Herr.Bugno | January 4, 2008 2:03 PM
Oh no, I wanted to see the Targa-concept-car...

by Suckio | January 4, 2008 2:10 PM
haha u have a point Herr.Bugno :P

by car.fan | January 4, 2008 2:16 PM
Audi seem to think the torque is too much anyway, so they limit it: http://www.schwab-kolb.com/JPG/AUDI/Audi0299.JPG (Q7 V12 TDI)

Sorry, here is the right picture:

by Herr.Bugno | January 4, 2008 2:27 PM
Herr.Bugno,

Diesel engines have different characteristics. The torque-line always has a flat portion that does not necessarily mean that it is limited (however it is possible for very high torque engines). It reaches the maximum sooner. Compare the characteristics of petrol and diesel engines at the same power. You get more torque with diesel. On the road petrol cars accelerate faster from 0 to 100 km/h for example, but diesels accelerate better on the fly (80 to 120 km/h) which is far more useful in everyday life (e. g. overtaking). Every technology has its strengths and weaknesses over the rest. If diesel engines do not fit in your image of a sports car, that does not mean, they are rubbish.

by Zeon | January 4, 2008 2:49 PM
thanks for the update m8 :)

by car.fan | January 4, 2008 2:40 PM
i think its better because diesel is more eco and v12 is big so whats wrong.

by heinz | January 4, 2008 2:44 PM
The size of the engine is not the most important factor heinz, it's how the power is applied to the road which is most important.

by car.fan | January 4, 2008 2:51 PM
The size of the engine is not the most important factor heinz, it's how the power is applied to the road which is most important. Audi has the necessary technologies, primarily its Quattro all wheel drive system.

by car.fan | January 4, 2008 2:52 PM
Sorry for the double post guys :/

by car.fan | January 4, 2008 2:53 PM
yipee!! :D i mean, thats a technical feat!! amazing.. now let the diesel supercar war begin!! :D

by wolff | January 4, 2008 3:34 PM
100kg more? Well they are certenly not heading for a supersports car. This will be more a Paris Hilton sports car=) This time they might have build "slowest sportscar ever"

by badis | January 4, 2008 3:56 PM
In fact, power and torque are related to each other:

P = 2 * n * pi * M

P (Power), n (revs), M (torque)

So you see the high torque of a diesel engine is related to it´s low revs. So who wants a low rev sportscar? A race tractor? :P

I have driven a diesel (150 hp Seat TDI) for 18 month and gladly sold it. It´s a great everyday engine, but is a failure from a sports drivers point of view (high weight, not revving).

by Herr.Bugno | January 4, 2008 4:01 PM
@Herr.Bugno:

I think you don´t kown what you are talking about.... Diesel could be the sporty future! A Seat Leon 1.9TDI with 150hp is very nice. Put in a software-tuning and you we´ll see, he will beat the Golf V GTI..... I know it, because i am leading a big Seat-club and many guys have this engine in their cars....

And because you spoke about....turbo-hole? I think the last car you´ve been droven was an old Mercedes, but no actual Diesel....

Man, please be serious....

Hate to burst everyone's bubble but this is a complete photoshop picture. here is the original http://image.automobilemag.com/f/multimedia/photo_gallery/6681905/0702_a+2008_audi_r8+09.jpg

and here is the copy http://www.a3quattro.de/technik/Audi-R8/R8-V12TDI-groß2.jpg

You can see that the mountain in the right of both pictures is the same and the entire back ground is the same.

by tmac87 | January 4, 2008 9:08 PM
the v12 TDI in the Q7 is not a normal diesel. It behaves almost like a petrol, revs to 5500rpm, great hp and amazing torque. If you think the diesel in the R10 revs only to 3000rpm then you are mistaken. The R8 wouldnt be my first choice for this engine, i would expect to see it in the A8-L or A6 before the R8.

by radmeister | January 4, 2008 10:19 PM
Yes, for example, the line to the TDI lettering is not parallel.

by Suckio | January 4, 2008 10:43 PM
Herr.Bugno, Audi never raced R8 diesel in LeMans if something it was R10. The car so fast becouse of its pickup ability especialy coming out of turns, plus fuel economy. And even when it got to cary extra weight as penalty it still was quicker then any other petrol car. I don't think you watch LeMans? The car cruises at around 5000 RPM.

by out4ride | January 5, 2008 12:09 AM
what ever it is ... having a petrol engine v12 powerful one is much much stunning beauty

by blaconque | January 5, 2008 1:25 AM
I'd buy it. A Diesel-powered sportscar has always been my dream.

Audi R8 V12 TDI Study what is it? the new car or new members

by cayenne | January 5, 2008 5:03 AM
Audi R8 V12 TDI Study what is it? the new car or new members. Nobody do that, Diesel Sport car i dont think so

by cayenne | January 5, 2008 5:06 AM
If Le Mans was the ultimate proving ground for engines, then you must agree that a rotary Wankel engine is the top because Mazda won Le Mans with a Wankel engine! :-) And years before Audi!

by Herr.Bugno | January 5, 2008 11:55 AM
Mazda only won the race once back in 1991. Audi has won 7 times!!! On top of that, Audi wasn't even competing in LeMans in 1991. Everyone has their opinion of diesel cars. The diesels of old sucked, plain and simple, but the new ones from Audi are absolutely top notch. A V12 TDI would be great in the R8. The new diesels feel just like a petrol engine just with much more torque.

by rwesq15 | January 5, 2008 7:07 PM
They should give us FSI V12 before TDI

by german-cars-lover | January 5, 2008 10:53 PM
Now this is what I'm talking about it. DO IT Audi. Just do it.

by brocky | January 6, 2008 12:47 AM
Totally agree with you Brocky!

I love the R8 a lot! It is my favorite car! But why oh why, did they have to ruin it with a diesel! I am not looking forward to the kind of noise its going to make! :-S

by Malhaar | January 6, 2008 11:45 PM
Bring it on Audi! Trade my E55AMG for that anyday.

by Bakgat | January 7, 2008 5:21 AM
wow. is car.fan really a car fan??? torque is what gets you off the line. horsepower is for sustained high speed. 60ft and 1/8mile times will always be faster in a car that has more torque than hp vs. a car with more hp than torque. this is why you should listen in school boys and girls, it keeps you from sounding like idiots when thoughts spew from your mouths. the r10 wasn't even challenged in the greatest race(le mans), except by officials with extra weight, and that didn't hurt it. torque can handle the pressure more so than hp. in the real world, no one is doing 200mph, what kind of race is that? whats really important is 0-100mph in 8.9 or less, thats what torque provides.
