Rolls Royce Steps Up Production

Annual Target of 1,000 Units

The rapid economic growth in emerging markets and the swelling demand for Rolls Royce luxury cars, up by 25% in 2007, has pushed delivery times to nearly two years. According to Ian Robertson, chairman of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, production has been sold out all the way to mid-2009.

While Rolls Royce's Goodwood plant has rolled out roughly 1,000 units of the Phantom and the Drophead Coupe in 2007, chairman Robertson expects sales to grow even faster in 2008. Robertson adds that "a lot of our dealers say they have simply stopped taking any more orders." Chairman Robertson has announced drastic measures to step up production to meet the increasing demand from wealthy individuals in emerging markets.

On top of its 650-strong workforce, Rolls Royce will recruit another 300 to 400 workers and invest an estimated £10 and £15 million in the Goodwood plant. When BMW revived the ailing luxury brand in 2002 with the Phantom luxury saloon, BMW invested approximately £65 million in the plant.

With China emerging as Rolls Royce's third biggest market, Robertson expects 100 cars to be sold this year, up from 71 cars in 2006. Robertson adds that it is "not bad when you consider we had not sold a single Rolls-Royce vehicle in China prior to 2003."

This is such a beautiful car... not for some of the reasons that make the Bentley GT a looker... instead this car smacks of luxurious understatement. Few machines today that cost a lot deliver such hand-crafted excellence. The other thing I love about the BMW interpretation of the signature Rolls Royce silhouette is how they command attention. While the Maybach simply looks like an old generic shape, no one sees a Rolls Royce and says "What's that?" because it makes a statement at first glance. When I was in London a deep Navy Blue Rolls Royce Phantom was outside a classy hotel, below a large British flag... every detail was visually complete... down to it self-leveling central hubs at each wheel. Simply perfect!

Rolls should build something to compete with the Continentals, or even at the least, the Arnage. The Park Ward and Silver Seraph sedans weren't that bad, and the Phantom and the Drophead are pretty well expensive.

Hand-crafted elegance my FOOT!!!! Rolls-Royce should mechanize the production line to make the cars more affordable.

Then you'd shred the "soul" of the company (which makes a Rolls so special and worth the investment) for immediate profit?

Why it seems like their sales are doing fine just the way it is.

I have a question, very simple question? Well..maybe more than one.

What makes handmade so good? Do humans not make mistakes, especially when robots can work so much faster, and mistake-free over repetitions? Humans are inconsistent and prone to errors.

Yeah humans do make mistakes and automation is better in certain cases, which i am sure certain parts for this car are manufactured by robots. The reason why handmade is better in this case is because at the end of the day a man will be driving this car, and a man's eyes will see the mistakes. A robot can only recognize mistakes that you tell it to recognize. In other cars automation works because the attention to detail is not as great or they are not as complicated. It's like taking a photograph and printing it on a really amazing colour printer vs. it being painted by Michelangelo, one is art and one is not. When this car gets off the line it is meant to be a work of art, based on years of crafstmanship and attention to detail. And that's exactly what it is.

I am still laughing at the "luxurious understatement" comment...

Damn this thing is ugly! Literally looks like a coffin on wheels!

The best coupe yet is yet to come from Cadillac. It's called ULC and you can google "motortrend Cadillac Coupe". It will be powered by a NorthStar XV12 engine.

It also allows for deeper quality control on a single unit basis, so the final result is unique, artistry I'd say. Can't wait for the Phantom featuring the 21st Century grill found on the equally superlative Drophead Coupé. I love RR.
