New BMW 5 Series Prototype Caught Again in Munich
Just in case you couldn't get enough of the new BMW 5 Series spy photos from last week, here are some fresh new ones. Also included is a new rendering, which, as a reminder, is speculative. The purpose of all of the renderings/artist illustrations that we publish is to give you an idea of the general design direction based on the latest spy photos. So don't get bent out of shape, if you think its going to look different because it most likely will.
Following the same path as the next generation 7 Series, the new BMW 5 Series will be less adventurous in its design compared to the current model. Using a new internal codename system, BMW has replaced the “E” designation (i.e. E60 for current 5 Series plartform) with “F” for the next generation 5-Series. Known internally as the “F10”, the new mid-size luxury sedan is the second new BMW model to receive the new code after the F01 BMW 7 Series which arrives in 2009.
The F10 5 Series will be equipped with a new 8-speed electronic automatic transmission, optional all-wheel-drive and engine ranging from six petrol engines, 2.5-liter 218hp to 4.4 liter V8 twin-turbo with 408hp and four diesels ranging from 2.0 liter 175hp to 3.0 liter 300hp.
With the current E60 5-Series on the market since 2004, the arrival of the F10 replacement is still three years away with an expected launch in spring 2010 as a 2011 model.
It will be the greatest sedan in the world
the next E - Class will be the greatest sedan in the world...and who need 8 speed auto, 7 speed double clucth will do just fine
that's a pretty big call...and you'll be wrong. An E-Class has never been the best at anything in the world, although Merc make a beautiful motor car it has not beaten the 5 series and as long as BMW prove they are the leaders in this class, Merc will with Audi and Lexus just trail behind with their boring-attitude customers looking for boring cars with a wet sponge for suspension. This new 5 looks smart and means business, watch out competition it'll rock...and make the current E60 look old :(
Phobos - you're a great guy, you totaly right. i there any need of 8-speed ?? no also bmw are copying Lexus, who are first to have 8 - speed - (we'll it all started from t Mercedes-Benz 7G-Tronic but I don't ind because i am proud of other vehcle nrands who copy Mercedes-Benz. The E-Class has always been te best in it's class - RCarvalho - don't forget the1995 E-CLASS - THAT HADTHE WORLD'S BEST BUILD QUALITY - REMEMBER THAT THE WORLD'S BEST BUILD QUALITY FROM THAT CAR IS STILL IN T SPIRIT OF THE CURRENT E-CLASS.
Really? I heard that the E class recently had serious problems including bake failures and other quality/reliability problems leading to mass recalls. Also I heard Mercedes Benz was rated as having the lowest quality and reliability of any car company earlier this year.
I think they make some nice cars though, but I probably wouldn't get one. They are too "mature" in my opinion, even the sporty models. But if you just want a straight luxury car they are worth considering.
HAH!!!
BMW Can never design - it looks so similar to the current 5 series - it looks ike a faceift of the 5 series now!!! lol - Have you seen the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class, it is totally different from the old C-Lass - that's what you call design and new design.
that's because M'Benz are designed boring ordinary cars that don't sell as well as BMW so they have to change their ways...BMW's aint's broke, so they don't need to fix it, just like the 2nd generation MINI - same design and sales are up 24% in the US. You 'Mercedes-Benz' obviously have no idea what to say you just have a shot at BMW without knowing what your name stands for. Face it, BMW will always be the leader...but of course you own a Daewoo and only have a Merc as your wallpaper on your Mum's PC so why I am telling you.
I donno guys to me that looks more like a 7 series than a 5 series. The car is too long for a 5 series and the door handles r off the current 7 series. also the flat and square rear off the 7 series. Could be an M7 testing mule.
do u really think the next 5er will look this? this is jus a photoshop job on the current 3series. n whoever says the eclass tops this car is not readin the stats properly. the 3 n 5 have always ruled the c and e.
Have you forgot, bmw use to copy Mercedes-Bez in their previous ranges, and still today they copy Mercedes-Benz, EG: Mercedes-enz were the first company to have more than 6 automatic gears (7G-TRONIC) and bmw now have made 8 speed in their upcoming vehcles, from what way do you say that the 3 and 5 have ruled?? mate u aint got the stats to proove me wrong, I am not joking.
also, I hope that the proper 5 looks like the picture above, just admit that it will look familiar, ain't you seen the new 7-series spy, it looks exactly the same and so many people wrote comments saying it looks exactly same bmw can't design as they ain't got much designing options available
k mate read ne mag. n see the comparisons between a 3 the c and say an audi a4. the bimmer always wins. k i admit the new 3 doesn look all tat great. but ive driven one n i mus say the experience is better.n by no means am i against merc. they have great cars. n ur a joker man sayin the next 5 will look this! this is a WCF job. it will never look like this. n are u kiddin me regardin the 7?? tats cus its a mule. do u know wat tat is?? n if u wanna see some great new 7 pics. chek out the latest automotor und sport mag. merc has great cars. i wud say the upcomn c63 is a real contender for the m3.
For what I can see, the grille is huge like the CS concept. So again you're a little behind on the old renderings but as you say it's just an 'impression'.
BMW has had a few great cars but none lately! 2002tii is still one of the best.
Coopergt, dont you know m5 and m6??those are amazing cars
Can someone ban username Mercedes-Benz? His remarks are very fanboyish and biased, not to mention stupid that someone would take a '3rd party concept rendering' as what the 'real thing' would be. =\
The next BMW 5 Series will be launch at the Geneva Motorshow on 2009. It's gonna be better than next E-Class. It's still a great drive.
just to be exact, the Audi A6 is the best selling upper-middle class sedan in the european market ( and thats where it counts, not the american market ) ... still, the eclass is a very good vehicle. quality issues, though.
I saw previous photos of this test mule. I thought the greenhouse looked too tall. However, in these photos, the proportions look great. If the design team gets they styling just right... this might be a winner.
BMW is surely a great car and Mercedes-Benz as well. Question is not which is better or greater, but these two have very defferent taste. BMW is a superstar for those who love the brand and M-B is as well for M-B lovers. World is enjoyable because you have a lot of possibility to choose from defferent tastes. The word "convergence " is what I am not fond of.
Just wanted to point out that the E-class, along with the CLK, SL, and S-classes, were highest ranked in initial quality in their respective categories by J.D. Power. Also, MB sells more vehicles per year in the USA than BMW in every segment other than the 3-series and the new C-class is gaining major ground. We literally cannot keep the C in stock right now... good problem to have but frustrating for our customers. I like BMW's from the 90's way better than Benzes of similar era, but Bimmers just don't do it for me anymore. I think it is the move towards more feminine styling look that all new BMW's seem to be adopting. I'll take a little E36 or E39 boxiness, thank you. I still want to buy a 97 or 98 M3 sedan just because of the looks, but would never pick an E90 or E92 over the new C-class based on styling or driving dynamics.
Please re-look at the head lights design. It is definely a bigger 3 Series look. Rather keep the current look or redesign it to look different from the 3 series. You have run out of ideas and surely you can try open a competition and the you will be able select a better match.

It look much bigger than the current model
