Nissan GT-R: Record-setting Ring Run?

Passing Porsche 911 Turbo

GTR overtook a 911 Turbo prototype.

Nissan has made it clear from the start that their new Skyline GT-R sports car is gunning for the Porsche 911 Turbo.  A 911 Turbo has been the benchmark on hand during the Skyline track sessions, and some wheel-to-wheel, nose-to-tail battles have even been documented during testing.  Nissan's assault on Porsche's pre-eminence has continued this past week at the Nürburgring, as test drivers have been running flat-out on the Nordschleife in pursuit of a fastest lap time than the 997 911 Turbo.

We watched as a Porsche-driven prototype for a facelifted 911 Turbo was on the track at the same time as a Skyline GT-R prototype.  Our observations from earlier test sessions--that the Skyline is as fast, and probably faster than the 911 Turbo--appeared to hold true this week, as the Skyline reeled-in, and overtook the 911 Turbo prototype.  While this is not scientific by any means--the 911 may have been running a less-intense durability cycle, and not a flat-out race run--our reporters on the scene hand-timed several of the Skylines laps and they recorded a best lap of 7 minutes 38 seconds.  If those times are accurate, then it appears that the Skyline may have bettered the 7:40 time logged by a 997 911 Turbo that stands as a lofty Nürburgring benchmark.

Nissan will reportedly be continuing their run at the 'Ring record books next week.  We'll be searching out any official confirmation of the Skyline's lap times, but you can be sure that if Nissan is successful at dethroning the 911 Turbo, it will be trumpeted loudly during the car's Tokyo debut in October.

seems unlikely...specially when you consider that the new big T has 500 hp. still, the GT-R looks awesome.

looks nice but if you put a Bugatti veyron on the track the GT-R is hopeless

The GT-R has far more tuning potential than the Bugatti. So in my opinon, the GT-R would stand a chance with the Veyron if you could add all the Nismo after market parts.

Heinz, why would you compare 2 cars that are in a completely different class. The Bugatti costs 10 times more than the expected price of the GT-R.

besides the price, the Bugatti also has 1000 hp, Nissan is aroud 400.......

the japanese car is really ugly. The Porsche is of course faster. This will all come to a head and pass over us with no records being broken. Just the jewish press trying to scare the germans. Nice try.

The R32, R33 and R34 models of the Skyline GT-R all beat the then current 911's Nurburgring times. A little history lesson for those who don't have a clue. That's always been a goal of the GT-R, and I wouldn't bet against this one doing it either. And don't forget that the Skyline got banned from international motor sport, because it couldn't stop winning. Another history lesson.

oh my god, the Bugatti name has appeared on a GT-R article. You guys must be really proud since this car is far quicker than a Rolls-Royce Phantom, right?

silversedanman what's wrong with you??? you think that all these are just crap ? ? ? You have nothing to say and the only thing u came up with is that it is ugly??? Comon.. comonn... I'm so sorry for you. u r one of those guys who don't want to see the status quo goin down. NEWSFLASH... IT IS GOIN DOWN with a car 1/4 of your precious porches price... byeeeee

Yeah and if you put the Veyron next to a bullet train its got no hope either. *rolls eyes* Anybody can go fast in a straight line but can they actually drive? My Ford Focus XR5(ST in Europe) might not be the fastest from the lights but I find most people in so called performance cars wimp out when the road doesn't go straight. On a track like the Ring the Veyron can be pwned by much cheaper less powerful cars not just the GTR.
