Don't let the thin disguising fool you, because underneath this black tape is the supercharged version of the all-new XK, out later this year. While the normal XK is offered with a version of the 305-bhp 4.4-litre V8 used in the latest Range Rover, the range will be joined later in the year by a tarmac-rippling R version. The XKR will feature Jaguar's supercharged 4.2-litre V8, which will develop at least 400 bhp.

These latest photos capture the sporty XKR version, showing both convertible and coupe prototypes as they undergo testing. The car can be recognized by an altered front end which does not have a horizontal chrome bar through the center of the grille. At the rear, the powerful XKR version has four big exhaust pipes. It also features extended wheel arches and a boot spoiler.

Jaguar is also contemplating an even higher output XKR-R model, which could develop up to 500bhp. This would give Coventry a credible rival to the mega-power Mercedes AMG-tuned SLs, as well as BMW's M6 range. Here’s also proof that, as with the old XK range, the new model will gain super-performance cabriolet versions, too.

As the new XK is considerably lighter, performance will be even more stellar than the current XKR's 0-100-km/h figure of 5.4 seconds. A 260-bhp entry-level V8 could be on the cards, too, as well as a 200-bhp six-cylinder diesel model. Both, the coupe and convertible are expected to debut at the Paris Motor Show this fall and to be in the showrooms in 2007.
