A3 Sportback e-tron leads the way

Audi has announced all core models are going to get a plug-in hybrid version in the next six years.

The company's R&D boss Ulrich Hackenberg has disclosed plans to hybridize several important models in the company's lineup by 2020, starting with the A3 e-tron which has recently gone on sale. Audi justifies its focus on plug-in hybrids by saying these "meet all our customers’ expectations."

Hackenberg went on to say Audi is working on two plug-in hybrid families, one for MQB-based models and another for larger MLB Evo models. The former will use a similar powertrain configuration as the A3 e-tron with an electric motor positioned between a transversely-mounted 1.4 TFSI gasoline engine working with a reworked 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox sending power to the front wheels.

MLB Evo models with longitudinal engines will feature a similar setup with an electric motor installed between the engine and the gearbox. Hackenberg specified that quattro versions of both MQB and MLB Evo models are possible.
