Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn announced today at NAIAS the CrossBlue concept will enter production in 2016.

The CrossBlue concept was introduced at last year's NAIAS and now we have learned from Volkswagen the vehicle will enter production phase in 2016 and company insiders are saying it will carry most of the design. It will have a seven-seat arrangement and will ride on VW's MQB platform so expect a wide array of engines, including four-cylinder diesels for United States.

The vehicle's engineering is already underway and a plug-in hybrid system – set to arrive this year in the Golf - could also be offered in some markets. Skoda's already confirmed 2016 SUV will probably be based on the seven-seat Volkswagen SUV which will likely receive a different moniker compared to the concept that a while ago was also presented with a coupe-like profile.

More details are provided in the press release section.
