Will battle the BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo

According to a recent report, the 2014 Mercedes C-Class will be offered as a five-door hatchback.

Citing company sources, Edmunds is reporting the hatchback will be positioned as a competitor to the BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo. Insiders have also revealed the model will be the "sportiest and most athletic" C-Class until the coupe is arrives in 2015.

Little else is known about the hatchback but it will be heavily influenced by the sedan which is slated to ride on the Mercedes Rear Drive Architecture (MRA) and have a wheelbase that spans approximately 112 inches (2844mm). Despite the increased dimensions, the 2014 C-Class sedan is expected weigh approximately 70 kg (154 lbs) less than outgoing model.

Engine options will likely carryover from the sedan, so expect choices to include:

  • A Renault-sourced 1.6-liter dCi with approximately 130 HP (96 kW)
  • A 2.2-liter CDI four-cylinder with outputs of 170 HP (125 kW), 204 HP (150 kW) and 231 HP (170 kW)
  • A 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 156 HP (114 kW)
  • A 2.0-liter four-cylinder with outputs of 184 HP (135 kW), 211 HP (155 kW) and 252 HP (185 kW)
  • A 3.0-liter V6 with 333 HP (245 kW)
