Crossing over to crossover territory?

Subaru has introduced an off-road inspired Outback in Australia.

Looking far more aggressive than the American and European variants, the Australian Outback has a "muscular" new appearance thanks to plastic body cladding, underbody protection and roof rails. The makeover also includes tinted headlights, a dark grey grille, mud flaps and dark grey alloy wheels.

According to Subaru Australia Managing Director, Nick Senior, "We've had a lot of customer feedback suggesting owners would like a slightly tougher-looking Outback with greater body protection, which is especially useful on rural roads where this wagon rates highly." He added, "These MY14 upgrades deliver on both fronts and will help maintain Outback's profile as one of the most versatile and capable wagons on Australian roads."

Subaru says the styling upgrades provide $2500 worth of "additional value" but pricing has only gone up by $500. This means the entry-level Outback 2.5i CVT now carries a base price of $38,990 AUD.

Outback Muscles Up

Subaru's Model Year 2014 Outback sports utility vehicle (SUV) is adding rugged and aggressive styling cues that underline its impressive All-Wheel Drive ability.

Widely regarded as the original crossover wagon, when launched in 1996, Outback is a firm favourite in the Subaru recreational range.

It offers genuine dirt road credentials and superior handling, combined with refined passenger car comfort - with the added insurance of an independent five-star occupant safety rating.

The muscular new MY14 Outback styling upgrades include:

  • Roof rails with integrated cross bars
  • Side sills and cladding
  • Wheel arch guards
  • Front and rear under body guard protectors
  • Front mud flaps
  • Dark grey front grille
  • Dark grey alloy wheels
  • Sporty headlights with black background

Despite adding over $2500 of additional value, the MY14 Outback Manufacturer's List Price* only increases by $500 on each variant.

Subaru Australia Managing Director, Nick Senior, said: "We've had a lot of customer feedback suggesting owners would like a slightly tougher-looking Outback with greater body protection, which is especially useful on rural roads where this wagon rates highly.

"These MY14 upgrades deliver on both fronts and will help maintain Outback's profile as one of the most versatile and capable wagons on Australian roads.

"The introduction of the diesel auto variant earlier this year combined with these latest changes highlights our long-term commitment to refining and enhancing our cars with the passing of each model year, in line with our All 4 the Driver customer promise."

The styling upgrades are standard on all Outback models, however customers not wanting the full kit have the option to specify just roof rails, side sills, dark grey front grille and alloy wheels, and the headlights with black background.

Already this year, Subaru announced multiple technical refinements to Outback, benefitting efficiency, handling and steering.

All Outback 2.5i variants added the new, more fuel-efficient and environmentally-friendly FB horizontally-opposed Boxer engine.

Outback's revised All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system improves precision in torque distribution between front and back wheels, refining handling and stability.

Outback 2.5i Premium gained Subaru's award-winning EyeSightâ„¢ driver assist system in addition to the colour information display. All EyeSightâ„¢-equipped Outbacks feature front sun visor extensions, dusk sensing headlights and rain sensing wipers.

I really don't understand the way this article is presented (rather unprofessional in my view): A) This car is identical in design (with the exception of the wheels color) to the American Outback that is sold for the past 2 years. B) The Outback IS a crossover and a very capable one as well. True, it's based on a wagon, but most crossovers and off-roaders are based on sedans and hatchbacks these days. C) It didn't get an off-road inspired exterior. IT IS an off-roader and these design cues created the OUtback 20 years ago, so it's definitely not new (or news). Like saying that the Impreza STI 2013 got a sport's car inspired exterior (lbecause the 2012 model didn't have such inspiration?)
