Caterham sports car to be significantly cheaper than the Renault Alpine - report

Could cost 35,000 GBP

New details are starting to emerge about Caterham's version of the Renault Alpine.

Set to be previewed by a concept early next year, the high-performance coupe will reportedly appeal to affluent females who have been turned off by Lotus' recent turmoil. As part of this effort, the model will be significantly cheaper than the Alpine and carry a base price of roughly £35,000 (€40,708 / $52,440).

Little else is known about the car but Caterham has reportedly dismissed the proposed 2.0-liter engine and is now rumored to be eyeing a turbocharged 1.6-liter that develops approximately 300 bhp (224 kW). The car could also be equipped with a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) to help link it to the company's F1 team.

According to Caterham Technologies CEO Mike Gascoyne, "If we do a good car, people will recognize it — and I’m confident that they’re going to. In a lot of parts of the world, Caterham isn’t that well known, and therefore we’re free to define the brand."
