During pre-production test drive in Europe

A BMW i3 wearing minimal camouflage was spied in Europe during a pre-production test drive.

Scheduled for an official unveiling in September at Frankfurt Motor Show, the BMW i3 will be sold as a full electric vehicle or with a range-extending engine.

The EV version will have a rear-mounted electric motor producing 170 bhp (127 kW) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque. It will also be available with a range-extending engine in the form of a two-cylinder, 0.65-liter motorcycle engine working together with an auxiliary generator which will charge the battery pack.

Head of product management at BMW i division Maximilian Kellner said the full electric i3 will have a range between 130 and 160 km (80 to 99 miles), while the range-extending version will cover up to 220 km (136 miles).

BMW works years on new cars to make sure it handles and performs like a BMW before it is released to the public. It took a few more years before the X5 came out as BMW wanted to make sure it did not handle like a truck. BMW is a big leader in car R&D and when this car comes out it will really change the EV market especially with the praise Tesla has been receiving. Yes new tech is expensive but just like the first plasma TVs the price will come down. The electric infrastructure is already in place, just a plug is needed. No more gas, oil changes or tune ups.

The first plasma TV I ever saw was $23,995.99 and it was only a 46 inch screen, it didn't come with speakers, it wasn't HD, and needed a seperate box to plug you DVD player into. Technology always gets better and eventually costs less.

On BimmerFile the pictures show three cars, the third car is wearing more camo then the first two. The front facia on the first two is the same but the third car looks more like the i3 concept's facia. Maybe BMW is going to offer the i3 with styling variations to distinguish the hybrid version from the electric version.

You could be right. Didn't notice the third one had more camo. Maybe it 's a coupe... ?

Maybe, but the first two cars don't have camo covering the center of the BMW kidney grills, so they might need more air for the ReX generator.

I think they should sell it with camo. It doesn't look that good without it :D

I admit, when we talk about the looks, I don't like it very much. When talking about what BMW is doing here (hybrid, electric car), I'm a huge fan. So I can actually omit the look (and maybe it will be better irl). Still, i8 will look awesome and that's what I'm looking for
