A BMW i3 wearing minimal camouflage was spied in Europe during a pre-production test drive.
Scheduled for an official unveiling in September at Frankfurt Motor Show, the BMW i3 will be sold as a full electric vehicle or with a range-extending engine.
The EV version will have a rear-mounted electric motor producing 170 bhp (127 kW) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque. It will also be available with a range-extending engine in the form of a two-cylinder, 0.65-liter motorcycle engine working together with an auxiliary generator which will charge the battery pack.
Head of product management at BMW i division Maximilian Kellner said the full electric i3 will have a range between 130 and 160 km (80 to 99 miles), while the range-extending version will cover up to 220 km (136 miles).
