2016 Mercedes C-Class coupe to revive the CLK moniker - report

2016 Mercedes C-Class coupe to revive the CLK moniker - report
2012 Mercedes C-Class Coupe - 13.2.2011

Promises to be lighter and sportier

The Mercedes C-Class Coupe hasn't been around for very long but a new report is indicating the next-generation model will drop that name and revive the CLK moniker.

Set to be offered as a coupe and convertible, the CLK will reportedly be a "highly emotional driver’s car" that combines attractive styling with a sporty driving experience.

Engine options remain unconfirmed but are rumored to include:

  • A 2.2-liter CDI four-cylinder with outputs of 170 HP (125 kW), 204 HP (150 kW) and 231 HP (170 kW)
  • A turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 156 HP (114 kW)
  • A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with outputs of 184 HP (135 kW), 211 HP (155 kW) and 252 HP (185 kW)
  • A twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 with 333 HP (245 kW)
  • A 4.0-liter V8 with 462 HP (340 kW)

The model is also expected to ride on the company's modular rear-wheel drive architecture (MRA) which should result in a roomier cabin and a lighter curb weight. Speaking of the latter, Mercedes has reportedly decided to make the doors, roof, front fenders and trunk lid out of lightweight aluminum.

The Mercedes CLK is expected to undercut the Audi A5 and BMW 4-Series when it is introduced in 2015 or 2016.

What is wrong with Mercedes Benz...Have they totally lost their mind..why are they confusing their buyers??? I don't even know what they call my Favourite Mercedes Benzes anymore... Anyway, I just hope they don't screw up the names of my all time Favourite Mercedes Benz Sports Coupes - the CL 55 AMG, the CL 65 AMG, the SL 55 AMG and the SLS AMG...

I think if they are going to revive the CLK moniker, they should remove the pillar like the original CLK just saying.

Original CLK had a B-pillar and was derided because of it (although it was an excellent car). The original "e class coupe", the 300CE, was based on the then current E-class, was pillarless and also too heavy and too expensive.

MB needs to have one CLK coupe between the C and E sedans and also the CL coupe between the E and S sedans, and eliminate the E/C/S coupe confusion altogether. However, that's just my opinion..

I agree. Similar to BMW with the 4 series and the 6 series.

I've never understood why they don't build the E-class coupe on the E platform. It would make a brilliant sized Grand Tourer.

The E coupe is built on the C class frame because it is shorter than the E frame, but the E coupe shares more components with the E class than the C class.

Agree with sub...talk about confusion the clk was aimed as an e class coupe replaced by e class coupe and then c class coupe was introduced..either call it something new or lay it to rest and use current moniker.

Other way around bro, the Honda looks like the Mercedes. Mercedes was there first!

I think Mercedes Benz is confused themselves about what to call their cars. They just dropped CLK for C-Class Coupe, and CL for S-Class Coupe (or they are expected to) and now want to go back to the old names?

it gets odder than that - according to official Merc documentation for dealers prior to it's release, it was the E-Class Coupe that replaced the CLK. So the CLK, which was named after the CL (CL-Kurtz or CL short) was replaced by and renamed as the E-Class as people were not associating it with the CL but the C-Class (which were it's underpinnings in the first place), then called it the E-Coupe even though it is based on the C-Class chassis, they then release a C-Class Coupe, based on the same chassis, plan on dropping the name "CL" and then go and release another CLK based on the same chassis as the CLK's so called replacement the E-Coupe! Worse still they release an AMG version of the so-called inferior C-Coupe, but not for the so called superior E-Coupe

Well put. You nailed it. Confusing as hell and a total shambles, full of renege and lacking in sound reason.

You are absolutely right and the most unfortunate thing is that even smart people buy them; just for the brand name.
