Mercedes vows to build AMG variants of the next E-Class Coupe and Convertible - report

Calls the decision not to a mistake

Mercedes product manager Gerd Junginger has revealed the company's decision not to build an AMG variant of the E-Class Coupe and Convertible was a mistake.

Speaking to Piston Heads, Junginger said the decision was made seven years ago when AMG had a more focused strategy. Now the company offers a plethora of AMG variants and Junginger contends “seen from now, yes it was a mistake" not to make an E63 AMG Coupe and Convertible.

Thankfully the company appears to have learned their lesson as Junginger said “next time we won’t make the same mistake.” This is a blessing and a curse as it's too late to offer an AMG variant of the current models so we'll have to wait until the next-generation arrives sometime later this decade.

Its ok. Just make the next Black Series model based on the E coupe with 5.5 twin turbo 600 hp and 1500 kg that would be insane!

Whatever anf whenever it does come it will be alot better than the half-assed attempt at a proper Mercedes Coupe than the current C63 Coupe. Worst Mercedes product decision in recent years was to develope the C Coupe and C63 Coupe instead of developing a E63 Coupe. The C class coupe just doesn't hold up against the 3 series coupe or the A5 coupe. Glad they admit their mistake and made proper decisions to rectify the mistake. The C63 Coupe just doesn't have the weight.

Having the CLK AMG compete successfully in motorsport events, being the first MB to receive the iconic 6.2 N/A V8, and spawning legendary variants such as the GTR, DTM, and Black Series, it came to me as a major omission by MB to not offer an AMG variant in the current E-Coupe. I'm therefore glad that this has been rectified.

Seven years ago they were making the monstrous R63 AMG, but why not a E63 AMG Coupe/Cabrio.

When I heard last time unofficial AMG statement was that 5,5 TT V8 from sedan won't fit into a coupe (because it's build on C-class platform) and they didn't want to offer sedan and coupe versions of the same model with different engines

Agree with you. That's exactly what I thought. The 5.5TT was never shown up in any C-class based models. It seems like the platform can only deliver the torque of 6.2NA.

About time! I never understood why they didn't make an AMG E-Coupe it's one of the best looking cars in the range and will look amazing with all the AMG bits and power. They should go the whole way and make a Black Series. Well done for seeing the light Merc!
