BMW explains how the 3-Series Touring came to life [video]

Invented by Max Reisböck

BMW TV has released a new clip explaining how the 3-Series Touring was born.

It was the mid-1980s when engineer Max Reisböck wanted to take his family onto vacation but the BMWs of those days were just too small to store the entire necessary luggage. With the desire to create a car which would be capable of holding the entire family belongings for the trip, he created the Touring variant out of a wrecked 3-Series Sedan.

He proposed this idea to the BMW board and they agreed with his new body style, thus the 3-Series Touring came to life. The latest iteration of the car is the 2013MY which offers 495 liters of luggage area, 35 liters more than its predecessor.

"First ever sportswagon"..? Naa..! Funny how this homemade first E30 wagon looked so much better than the following 3-series wagon (1992), which indeed looked homemade!
