Company aims to get big by going small

Volvo recently started developing a small platform with Geely and new details are starting to emerge about the vehicles that will be underpinned by the new architecture.

Automobile Magazine says the first model will be an entry-level XC40 that will slot between the V40 Cross Country and the larger XC60. It will reportedly compete with the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA.

Shortly after the XC40 is introduced, we can expect a five-door hatchback that is roughly the same size as the Volkswagen Golf. The model will reportedly be more spacious than the S40 and is designed to battle the Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series sedan.

More interestingly, the company is reportedly considering a C60 coupe that would be based on the Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA). Little is known about the model, but it reportedly draws some styling cues from the iconic P1800.

Make a new car for 20 centimeters? Since the focus is also about the same length, you can also call the v40 a golf competitor. I'd like to see a 1 serie sedan

I thought the V40 was Volvo's proposal in the sub-segment of the A3, 1 Series and Class A. It is based on the current Focus, wich is a Golf competitor, and it too is an hatchback. Seems odd that they're going to make a car they already have in their range.

I thought that too. But aren't recent Volvo's V-Series cars suppose to be wagons?

Just check the specs, the V40 is within an inch or 2 of the new Focus hatchback, they're practically the same size. V-series cars were originally wagons, but it looks like they're applying it to 5-door hatches too. The V40 vs Focus hatch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpU5hfEfG3g

You guys are right, the V range in the previous models were wagons, but this one doesn't fit. The Focus Station has a lenght of 4,556m, while the 5 door Focus hatch is 4,358m and the V40 is 4,369m. So it is only 1 centimeter longer than the Focus hatch and 19 centimeters shorter than the Station. If it was supposed to be a wagon, it is a pretty small one, taking in account the size of the model in wich it is supposedly based on. I think it is pretty safe to assume that the source of that news was just being creative trying not to have a blank.

The fairly new V40 is the same size as a Ford Focus hatchback... I believe that makes it almost Golf-sized since a Golf is just a bit shorter than a Focus hatch.
