BMW X4 concept leaked, debuts in Shanghai
BMW X4 concept leaked photo 04.3.2013

Expected to be based on the X3

The first pictures of the BMW X4 concept have leaked to the web.

Set to debut at the Shanghai Motor Show, the concept closely resembles the X6 and features a sporty front fascia with a prominent grille and LED-infused headlights. We can also see a sculpted hood, a distinctive roofline and a dual exhaust system.

BMW has already announced plans to build the X4 at their plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The company hasn't revealed when it will go into production but development chief Herbert Diess recently confirmed the model will be launched in 2014.

Engine options are expected to carryover from the X3, so expect choices to include a TwinPower Turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 240 bhp (179 kW) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of torque as well as a TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter inline-six with 300 bhp (224 kW) and 300 lb-ft (406 Nm) of torque.

I still dont get with this whole SUV CROSS COUPE HIGH LAND BATTLESHIP FLOATING MONKEY thing, If you want a BMW coupe buy a 4 series, If you want a SUV buy an X5, If you really need a small coupe suv.. get a life.

What if you wanted both 4 series and X car in one? What is wrong with having that? X6 sales has inspired BMW to create this. So there is a good lot of people that want these types of vehicles.

Want a sedan? 3 series sedan. Want more space in your sedan? 3 series touring. Want more even more space, versatility + exclusivity in your sedan? 3GT. Want all of the above plus raised ground clearance in a sports vehicle? X4. There was nothing ever wrong with "choice". Wouldn't you agree??

What you say is fair enough but I think there's a point when there becomes too much choice. When there is too much crossover between products, and then the brand and its direction becomes diluted. Personally I think this renders the 3GT useless, but that's just my opinion.

Judging by the rediculous surge in X3 and X1 sales, this is going to blaze the sales charts. This is a guaranteed success story especially looking like that. Great lines. M version will be crazy. If i had the money, not M4, it would be an M version in this.

You have 4 thumbs down for liking this concept. I don't understand this "thumbs up", "thumbs down" philosophy. It never really served a purpose other than a number at the end of a comment. Most times people just "thumbs down" you for the fun of it.

The thumbs down part of the system is for people who are too stupid to think of a way to reply. It also is sadly a way to express bias.

Tall 3GT or smaller X6... take your pick but I think BMW is going overboard with the sloping roof concept

Will the Audi q4 be overboard too with its sloped roof?

The X6 and 3GT is the only BMW models with a sloping roofline. I would not consider that going overboard since they have the 1,3,5,7 and Z models in their lineup that does not feature this sloping roof. Me thinks some people need to have their eyes examined.

Looks good should be a great competitor to the Porsche Macan, and to a lesser extent the Audi q4.

I would not discount the Audi though most in the automotive world is looking forward to the Macan/X4 matchup.

I like it, the proportions are much better then the X6. It's leaner and sportier, I'm sure this reflects the lessons learned and the next X6 will look just as good as the X4. Though I do like the current X6 I've always felt that its a little too fat looking.

Its the front of the X6 that looks a bit "soft". The rear and rear 3/4 view look great.

I don't know I think the X6 looks great but it comes off as heavy looking to me. It's like the difference between the first gen X5 and the current version X5.

Why do I feel like I've seen this before? I can already envision what the interior looks like. Dare I say that BMW has become the most predictable of the three luxury german marques. Audi runs a close second. I now look to Mercedes to see something different in their designs and a greater degree of differentiation across their entire model range. Hopefully Audi makes good on their promise of doing the same in the future. I despair to think of a roadway clogged with x1,x2,x4,x6,3er gts, etc. This takes the "1 sausage, different lengths" to a whole new level.
