Arriving next year

BMW's sales chief Ian Robertson believes the X4 will expand the company's customer base.

The new X model in BMW's lineup will look sportier than the X3 with coupe styling and a lower roofline. BMW will follow the same recipe used for the X6 which was envisioned as a sportier X5. Robertson says the company attracted different customers when the X6 came out and he considers this will happen with the X4.

Yesterday we learned from the company's development chief Herbert Diess, the X4 will be launched in 2014. It will be manufactured in Spartanburg, South California where the Bavarian firm will increase production capacity from 300,000 to 350,000 units per year. This is the only place where BMW makes the X3, X5 and X6, while the X1 is produced in Leipzig, Germany and in China.

car makers will chase money whichever way they can regardless of how ridiculous the product is. we are way past the era when a car was a symbol, now its just a commodity which is a shame.

It would be nice if "expanding their customer base" wasn't the only thing they cared about these days. I know selling cars is the whole point of being a car company, but all these X and GT variants are jumping the shark. Ditto the MINI range...

Lol, what? Minis are some of the best driving FWD cars on the market period. Also if you dont like the X and Gt vehicles you dont have to buy one...they still make their bread and butter classic coupes, sedans, and wagons. Which are still the most enthusiast orientated out of the competition. And in may cases best in class..they may not always be the fastest, but fastest and best driving do not necessarily go hand in hand. Also Mercedes and Audi all offer similar SUV & hatchback linupe.....so you knock one you gotta knock them all.

BMW did such a good job with niche cars, that Audi and Mercedes are trying the same thing now. Not everyone wants the same kind of cars. The car industry is not communism.

The X4 in many ways makes more sense than the X6. Its smaller frame can make it look muscular, but not grotesque like the X6. And the higher ride height can make the cross-coupe proportions work better than the carlike 3/5 GT
