BMW hints at a Mercedes AMG Black Series competitor - report

BMW hints at a Mercedes AMG Black Series competitor - report
2012 BMW M5 - 15.6.2011

One or two new high-performance variants planned?

Audi and Mercedes have been pumping out high-performance versions of their RS and AMG variants, while BMW has been content with releasing M models with unique paint and additional standard equipment. That could soon be changing as BMW USA has hinted at releasing even more hardcore variants of their M lineup.

Speaking to former Automobile Magazine Road Test Editor Marc Noordeloos, BMW's PR team said "it will an interesting year" in regards to having an AMG Black Series competitor. The PR person went on to say Americans can expect one or two new special editions in the same vein as the M3 CSL, GTS and CRT.

The interview was conducted for an upcoming Automobile article, so expect to learn more in the coming weeks.

they could do the C class competitor with the M3, but how are they going to do a SLS Black series competitor? M6 can't get there, is to fat and luxury orientated... Like the SL65 Black series, good on straight line, but rubish around tracks

SLS Black Series competition is impossible because of the time frame. Even if BMW already started development of an SLS competitor, I bet we won't see it before 2016 or 2017. By that time, the SLS might be on its final year and it will be 6 years since it has been produced. Also, by that time, the SLS Black Series will be loooooooooooooooooong sold out already.

That's true what you said, but I was takinf the point that they would do the "black series" treatment to some model that they already had in the line up, in this case the M6

I know what you meant, so you get a thumbs down. Like this dude here, most people dont get it. This is what class is all about today, not 450 versions of Nissan GT-R..

They kind of were doing that already, with the e30 Evo, CSL, GTS, like you said. Now it seems they're just standardizing that hierarchy. Personally I loved the different names each time: it made each generation feel unique, with its own special edition. Also, I really hope they name the series CSL!

As a BMW fan and owner, I think this is terrible news: Now an M5 owner wont be the one with the best bad-ass car on the planet, someone with an M5 GTS will take the podium. I'm sure I'll never be able to afford a super-duper M5.

I don't think the M5 will get the treatment (E63 didn't). I understand your concern though. M3 will definitely get it, and I'm hoping the M6 coupe will be the other one. On the 4-doors, going hardcore doesn't make much sense. Or here's hoping that they will finally unveil a mid-engined supercar, in order to introduce the sub-brand. One can only hope...

Ness7, If I was "just" a Fanboy for BMW brand. Problem Bro? You're probably a fan of Lady Gaga or some junk. I love BMW's, I also Love Audi's, I love 1973 Camaro, or the VW Corrado. I owned some of those cars - "I put my money where my mouth is" as they say. Just because you like Elton John, I don't call you just a fan boy, right? Geez. Go drive your toyota and come back when you have some constructive argument.

@ALIK MALIX: Ok no problem again! Yeah I have a 2012 "Toyota" Yaris as a daily drive and a BMW 635d as a second car. So YOU SEE I'm driving a BMW and I'm not a fanboy of any car maker. I just drive what gives me more pleasure for my Money. :)

well.......... i just hope they will get the numbers on paper right this time, so its not like with Alpina B7, when paper say one but actualy its a lot less :( thats called cheating and lying to customers!!! TRY YOUTUBE - Audi S8 vs BMW Alpina B7 - Head 2 Head...

Alpina is a third party company, Unline Alpina, when BMW puts out numbers (specially for M5) owners that dino'd their car (I'm a real witness have seen higher numbers - not lower) BMW under-rates their numbers - many people will tell you that. So I wouldn't worry about it.

That is what you call playing safe, Audi does the same for its cars. They rather under-rate then over-rate them.
