2014 Audi A8 L TDI pricing announced for US [video]

Starts at $82,500

Audi recently announced plans to offer an A8 L TDI in the United States and now the company has followed up with full pricing and performance information.

Set to go on sale this spring, the model has a 3.0-liter TDI engine that produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque. It enables the sedan to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds and return an EPA-estimated 24 mpg city / 36 mpg highway/ 28 mpg combined (US).

The model will be priced from $82,500 which is a slight premium over the 2013 A8 L 3.0 TFSI that retails for $78,500. While the model isn't cheap, it's still $10,500 less than its nearest rival - the Mercedes S350 BlueTEC.

I test drove the A6 3.0TFSI and 3.0TDI and bought the diesel. There were some financial incentives but personally I thought the TDI suited the personality of the car better. I imagine I would do the same with an A8.

I will stay a petrolhead for life! An Audi flagship should have Premium Unleaded fuel burning through V12 powerplant. Diesel suddenly makes it look like a German Airport taxi! No audio in the video to spare us the ear-ache!

This is frustrating. I like Audi. I Like diesels, but why fit something that is a niche engine for the US market into a car that is already a niche car (not a high volume seller)? It seems the motivation could come from 'bragging rights' against the Merc. Or maybe an attempt to raise the perception of diesels. Either way, I really hope this sells well, otherwise Audi will likely say 'See, diesels don't sell in the US, so we'll keep holding off'. I would rather they focus diesel engines on their volume sellers - Where's the 2.0 tdi for the A4 and Q5? The diesel market would gather quicker momentum with the approach, and would help diesel availability in other cars - BMW 1, 3, X3... then maybe other brands would follow suit. Look what Audi started with front LED lights... now almost every car under the sun has them in some way or another. Just some thoughts.

$82k is absurd for only 240hp I dont care how much torque it puts out. Audi is smoking too much sour diesel. S8 should be at that price. At the end of the day its still a VW product for those who know the history. If it was priced $20k to $30k less, it would be simply a decent buy. Again who would spend $82k for only 240hp?? The same kind of person who would buy a Benz 6.3 AMG car but specify the base model's bumper and grille in a businessman executive package.

I have a feeling that you are smoking something mate. First, this is luxury sedan not a sporty coupe. Second, Mercedes with its diesel is even more expensive, around $10k more, and has same power output. And if you say Audi is VW, which it isn't, then why Audi has taken MB down, in terms of sales, and are catching up on BM? Why Audi is voted 'best premium brand' by consumers? Have you seen number of Audi SUV's on the roads? A1? You have to be a total idiot to say Audi is nothing like BM or MB. And I am not saying either of them cars are bad, they are all great. Have a good day.

slim, your logic is-for a lack of a better word-completely retarded. do you know how much hp the s 350 bluetec outputs? 240. do you know what the base price of a s 350 bluetec is? $93,000. can you do simple math and tell me, between the a8 and the s350, which car costs less? probably not.

It's pretty hard to do math when you are smoking sour diesel.

If you have the money to A8L, I guess you should invest in something other than a diesel... petrol is smoother and lighter

Here comes the Audi Fanboy crying again... I would say the same if it was a S class or a 7 series, is not because is a "TDI"... Petrol is lighter (aluminum block, less torque = ligther transmission) and smoother (less piston stroke = less vibration)... Diesels made huge evolution in noise and vibration, but not silky smooth as petrol yet
