Flagship arriving this year

Our spies have taken a few photos with the next-gen S-Class set to be unveiled later this year.

With every batch of spy photos, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is losing more of its camouflage and we get to see its Aesthetic S design language. The front of the car shows an F700-inspired grille and LED-infused headlights, while at the back it boasts two exhaust pipes and CL-inspired taillights.

The high-tech cabin will have an instrument panel with two generous LCD screens. One is replacing the usual analog instruments while the other one will be a multifunctional touchscreen unit taking care of the climate, sat-nav, communication and entertainment controls.

Under the hood it will get the company's new MoVe (modular V6 and V8) engines which will most likely feature turbocharging and direct injection. Various reports are indicating three hybrid choices will be available, with an electric output of 41 hp (30 kW), 61 hp (45 kW) and 109 hp (81 kW).

The V12 bi-turbo engine in the S65 AMG is likely to get 680 hp (507 kW). This range-topping model is expected to receive carbon fiber doors, boot and hood in order to lose some weight.

As you would expect from a new S-Class, Mercedes-Benz will implement an array of new tech with an emphasis on safety. In addition, the S-Class (W222) will be offered in three different lengths which will be joined by a convertible and a coupe.

In terms of exterior looks, i prefer the current one to this but i cannot imagine the technology in this new one.

Just saw the interior online, and it is definatly different from what I expected. The 2 giant LCD screens are a first in the industry and should be interesting to see if it takes off.

Looks way too much like the W221 S-class. MB should have made the car much more imposing if it seriously wants to compete in the Bentley/Rolls-Royce category. The bonnet needs to exude more masculinity and not be too sloping, the grille needs to be more upright, and for God's sake, PLEASE put the 3-pointed star back on the grille and not on the bonnet where it looks like a stuck-on afterthought. They should have brought more elements of the fantastically designed W126 S-class, albeit with a modern theme. Rolls-Royce has done a fantastic job with the styling of its current cars, as has Bentley. I hope once the camo comes of this W222 it looks more imposing than these images suggest.

Really? I hate the 3-pointed star on the grille (in the sedans.) It should be on the bonnet on the sedans and on the grill for coupes, roadsters and the G-Wagen. (ML, GLK, GL...I couldn't care less...)

The c class sports really made me like the three pointed star on the grille and it has proven in sales in the US this year. I makes the car looked aggressive and sporty. This though however is appeals to top executive ans should remain traditional.

I meant put the star back on top of the grille (a la W126 and earlier Mercedes), not in the center of the grille, like the facelifted E-class an c class sport sedan. I agree with you that it looks plain stupid and dilutes the brand.

@MercLover Yeah that's what I thought too. It's a shame that when you choose the Advantgarde trim with the sports appearance package you automatically get the star in the grille. Although I did find out from experience there were LOTS of people willing to trade their bonnet mounted star and grill from an Elegance trim car for my ugly grill with the star stuck on it. I guess people don't care about traditions and conventions anymore.

I think this car has been in development for such a long time that I am afraid that when it comes out it could look out-dated...

True; and it being conservative is just staying with its German brothers A8 and the 7 series. Its what is hidden under the skin.

The more it losts its camo the more I used to like the current one, which is a fine piece of an automobile. However Daimler's decision to prefer a more conservative design makes the Xj and the new Quattroporte become more attractive for several costumers.

The V12 bi-turbo engine in the S65 AMG is likely to get 680 hp !!! the current S65 has 620 and does 0-60 in 4.1 seconds. if the numbers are true, then the new s65 will be the most powerful sedan in its category.

I sadly agree with Ivo 205. I was recently at our local MBZ dealer, and for the first time in decades...there was NOT a single model, that I wanted!! Before I made the swtich to Range Rover and BMW/Rolls Royce...our family usually had 2-3 Mercedes at any given time in our garage. Now we just have one (a G63 AMG), and the one we have is like a 35 year old design!! LOL

I fully realise this is personal, but I dislike every new Mercedes model in profile.

I think they should've used the Actros grille and be done with it.

Not quite...only the speedometer in W221 is LCD. The other gauges are actually analog. In the new model, the entire gauge set will be artificial.
