Expected to be a spiritual successor to the Z3

We haven't heard much about the BMW Z2 lately, but new details are starting to emerge about the entry-level roadster.

Autocar is reporting that one of their sources has confirmed the company is considering an entry-level model in the same vein as the original Z3. The informant went on to say the car is about the same size as the Z3 but will ride on the company's front-wheel drive UKL platform.

In order to keep costs down, the model will likely be developed alongside the next-generation MINI Coupe and Roadster. The car is also expected to eschew the Z4's folding hardtop for a cheaper fabric roof.

Engine options remain unconfirmed, but speculation suggests we can expect a fairly limited petrol lineup. There's also word of an M Performance variant which could have all-wheel drive and a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with up to 300 bhp (224 kW).

The BMW Z2 could be launched in 2015 with a base price as low as £15,000.

An FWD BMW! First the Double-Vanos engine died, then the Chris Bangled 'flame surfacing' design language wreaked havoc on all models and now the Holy Grail of BMW driving experience is about to be shot to pieces by replacing a sexy ROADSTER's RWD set-up with a...I can't even say it anymore! I thought that is VW territory?! Even Quattro-badged RS Audis now have RW-biased torque-split nowadays including the game-changing R8! Sad news indeed.

One has to wonder if there is conflict within BMW to add new cars to the BMW lineup or to add them to a relaunched Triumph lineup.

I like the idea of a Z2 (the Z4 is getting too big) and my beloved Mercedes still hasn't got that driving satisfaction with the SLK after all these years... I really want a small roadster so a Z2 would be great... BUT seriously NO FWD. Why not use the 1-Series platform?

I totally agree. I have a 2009 z4 and... Is not a real sport car but a sport-touring car. I would like the idea of a smaller car like this z2 but only with a powerful engine and (obiouvsly) rwd

Nice illustration. Totally agree, please no FWD. Don't ruin what could be an epic small roadster by making it FWD. Don't compromise this in the quest to achieve a lower price.

It doesn't make sense to me either since the biggest advantage of having fwd is to be able to able to handle harsher whether. But who's gonna drive a small convertible roadster on the snow?!

No, no, no, please no FWD. This deserves to be a RWD small sports roadster. Look at the MX-5, look at the BRZ/FR-S/GT-86. Small, light and RWD are in right now and will sell. Please for the love of all that is holy do not make this a front wheel drive roadster. If I want a FWD roadster I'd buy a Mini Cooper roadster.
