To be VW's most fuel efficient car ever

The Volkswagen XL1 has been spied once again by our photographers, ahead of this year's possible launch.

It seems VW is very serious about putting the frugal XL1 into production as a prototype of the company's most fuel efficient car has been spied once again. This is a follow-up to the L1 shown in 2009 and the Formula XL1 presented in 2011 at the Qatar Motor Show.

The German company has previously mentioned the car will do an impressive 261 mpg (313 mpg UK or 0.9 liters / 100 km) and have CO2 emissions of only 24 g/km. Power will come from a 2-cylinder, 800cc diesel generating 47 hp (35 kW) and 89 lb-ft (121 Nm) of torque. It will send power to the rear wheels through a seven-speed DSG gearbox.

There will also be an electric motor producing 27 hp (20 kW) and 73 lb-ft (100 Nm) of torque. It can work together with the diesel or on its own, providing the XL1 a 21 miles (35 km) range in electric mode. The vehicle will have a drag coefficient of 0.186 and will weigh about 1,752 lbs (795 kg). 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) should take 11.9 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 98 mph (158 km/h).

Should I even dare mention how similar the front end looks to the new NSX...is VW's time to twitter and bash Acura like Audi did from the last article

Why "efficient" is meaning "ugly" on these vehicles? Why they can`t keep the aerodinamics alltogether with the sexyness in the same package?

(That suggests that aerodynamics and efficiency are coupled.)

Because the best aerodynamic shapes are not pretty. Or they could make something like the Peugeot 4002 concept : http://img2.netcarshow.com/Peugeot-4002_Concept_2003_1280x960_wallpaper_05.jpg
