Company is prepared to develop a new small platform by itself

Volvo's newly appointed CEO, Hakan Samuelsson, has confirmed plans to launch nine new or updated models by 2015.

Speaking on the sidelines of the North American International Auto Show, Samuelsson told Autocar that eight models will be given "significant updates" within a year. The ninth model will be the redesigned XC90 which is slated to ride on the company's new Scaleable Platform Architecture.

Samuelsson also revealed Volvo is preparing to develop a small platform on its own if a suitable partner cannot be found to share an architecture with the next-generation S40 and V50. Parts could be shared with Geely to reduce costs, but nothing is official as of yet.

The executive also said the company is becoming increasingly dependent on crossovers and the brand won't build any models smaller than the V40.

Despite some ugly cues I like Volvos but more often than not what I hear from owners are complaints.
