GM CEO Dan Akerson and PSA Peugeot Citro├źn Chairman of the Managing Board Philippe Varin sign global alliance 29.2.2012

No plans to sell Opel to PSA

In an interview given to the press today at 2013 NAIAS, GM's CEO said "Opel is not for sale."

Recently a rumor about GM selling Opel to PSA Peugeot Citroen started to circulate the web but this won't happen as General Motors CEO Dan Akerson said "it's not going to be given away either."

The report appeared in La Tribune's Monday issue and mentioned the possibility of Peugeot taking over Opel with backing from General Motors and the French state. La Tribune added GM would be willing to contribute with several billion euros to make this transaction happen and entice Peugeot to take Opel off its hands.

A few days ago we talked about the in-depth restructuring plan Opel/Vauxhall have developed. They are set to launch 23 new models and 13 new engine by 2016. In addition, reducing costs by 500M USD is also part of the "Drive! 2022" plan.

I believe Opel is the second best GM brand after Cadillac and they would do a lot better if GM let them go global but the financial and technological help they receive from the mother company cannot be overlooked so Opel is part of GM whether we like it or not.
