According to GM's 2014 VIN cards, the 2014 Verano could drop the entry-level 2.4-liter Ecotec engine in favor of a new 1.6-liter turbo.
This new power unit is listed as a 4-cylinder, 1.6-liter turbocharged engine featuring direct fuel injection and variable valve timing. In Europe, GM is using the 1.6-liter Ecotec turbo with an output of 192 hp (143 kW) and 170 lb-ft (230 Nm) of torque. This could be a good move from GM as the current 2.4-liter in the entry-level 2013 Verano offers 180 hp (134 kW) and 171 lb-ft (231 Nm) of torque. Thanks to the turbo, most of the torque will be available at about 1,900 rpm.
At this time, no other major changes are expected for the 2014 model year. It will certainly be offered with the recently introduced Ecotec 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged engine available in the 2013 Regal GS as well. In the 2013 Verano it generates 250 hp (186 kW) and 260 lb-ft (353 Nm) of torque, enough for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) run in 6.2 seconds.
