Could be launched in 2016

According to a recent report, Maserati is developing a compact crossover to battle the Porsche Macan.

Car & Driver says the model will slot below the Levante - which was recently previewed by the Kubang concept - and ride on the Compact U.S. Wide platform. This would mean the model would be closely related to the Jeep Liberty successor which isn't too surprising since the larger Levante will be based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Unfortunately, the magazine is suggesting the model could replace the Alfa Romeo crossover which would mean that particular brand will have still have a glaring product gap.

If everything goes according to plan, the entry-level crossover could be launched in 2016.

Will Maserati go the way of Porsche??? By sharing platforms of Chrysler?? If they are trying to expand their lineup, they may lose their own identity like present.

Every luxury car company is placing a crossover in their line-ups. No doubt this market exists, but what makes them so popular?

Because they're fast, good looking, well built and practical. Buyers of expensive cross-overs typically have another sports car in their garage.
