Audi says their proposed diesel-electric supercar would be the worlds best
2013 Audi R8 V10 Plus

Could have 700 bhp

New details are starting to emerge about Audi's proposed diesel-electric supercar.

Speaking with Auto Express, quattro GmbH Managing Director Franciscus Van Meel said "If we make this car, it will be the absolute best supercar and completely different in concept to the R8." He also revealed the model would be very innovative and embody the company's motto of Vorsprung Durch Technik.

Previous reports have indicated the car could have a combined output of approximately 700 bhp (522 kW) and 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft) of torque. This could enable the model to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in roughly 3.0 seconds, before hitting a top speed in excess of 322 km/h (200 mph).

Regardless of the final numbers, Van Meel said the car would be better than the upcoming McLaren P1.

What's the point of a super-car that look this mundane! The production car is almost 8 yrs old... that thing looks outdated. Need a new generation!

The pic is a 2013 R8, the car they are talking about is an R10 sitting above the R8 for which only concept pics exist (check link in the article)

Also remember that Audi and Porsche are under the same umbrella. Porsche new 918 supercar is a gas/electric hybrid and so Audi is making a diesel/electric car from the same mold!

Audi has been the leader in diesel tech and with the new developing hybrid tech they could be working on something awesome. Remember their F1 diesel.

As some people know, diesel engines are heavy, and electric stuff even heavier... This would be a 2 tone supercar... Fast in straight line, crap in corners

The Nissan GT-R is pretty heavy and it corners fast. If Audi wants to compete against McLaren, they will build a $1 million+ car and use their Le Mans "ultra" carbon fiber technology : http://motorsportpress.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/64295aud-audi_motorsport_110610_0152.jpg

True... but imagin the GTR with 200kg less.... How much faster it could be? Physics are simple, more weight, worse aceleration, braking and cornering. Maybe that's why the GTR and Aventador with AWD get their ass kicked by for example a Mclaren 12c with RWD but much lighter

I obviously understand why you guys are doubtful but it's not like audi hasn't shown they are capable this, look on the track at Le Mans. Some may think that a far cry from the F1 grid of Mclaren, but is it really? Audi constantly says they are in Le Mans and not F1 because it translates better to their road cars, this proposed supercar would just be proof of that.

i think they'd need to come up with some new tech to make the diesel engine and batteries lighter and more potent otherwise it'll be one fat baby.

Just because the car is best at Le-Man's doesn't mean that it's best at everything. Plus, I think their biggest challenge would be transitioning their tech into a production car with lowest cost possible. Like I said, that remains to be seen.
