Volkswagen Routan axed - report

Will likely be replaced by a seven-seat crossover

Volkswagen's Head of Brand Design, Klaus Bischoff, recently announced a Routan successor wasn't on the company's "to-do list," so it comes as little surprise that a new report is indicating the minivan has been axed.

According to Allpar, contract production of the Routan has ended at Chrysler's plant in Windsor, Canada. Volkswagen hasn't confirmed the rumors but the company has only sold 9,923 Routans in the United States through the first eleven months of the year - a 16.9% decline from 2011.

As a refresher, the Routan is a rebadged version of the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country. It features revised styling and unique suspension tuning, but is equipped a Chrysler-sourced 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 283 bhp (211 kW) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of torque.

This car was a marketing fail and a lazy attempt at making profit. It was completely a dodge grand caravan but for a 10,000$ premium. What pissed me off about this car was that for that extra 10,000$ they could of stuck in one of their TDIs 2.0L and 3.2L. It would of been the ONLY diesel van on the market in NA, and would of by far had the best mpg. I think that was their main mistake with this POS as most soccer moms or people who own minivans don't care about performance, cant hear the engine sound anyways because of the kids, already have high expenses so fuel savings would be a big deal. That's just my 2 cents on the main reason for the failure of this van.
