Jay Leno test drives the 2014 Lexus IS [video]

Debuts in Detroit

The 2014 Lexus IS won't be unveiled until next month's North American International Auto Show, but that hasn't stopped Jay Leno from getting a test drive of the upcoming model.

Set to resemble the LF-CC concept, the 2014 IS will ride on a shortened version of the same platform that underpins the GS. It will also have a revised suspension with softer springs and stiffer anti-roll bars.

While the exterior is still camouflaged, we can see the cabin will be slightly drab as there doesn't appear to be a lot of trim on the doors or dashboard. However, we can expect metallic accents, chromed door handles and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Under the hood, a variety of engines will be available. Choices are slated to include a 2.5-liter V6 with 200+ bhp (149+ kW), a 3.5-liter V6 with 300+ bhp (224+ kW) and a hybridized 2.5-liter four-cylinder with approximately 240 bhp (179 kW). The latter engine will be connected to a continuously variable transmission which should enable the sedan to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in approximately 6.9 seconds and hit a top speed of roughly 225 km/h (140 mph). In terms of efficiency, the hybrid could average 73 mpg UK (3.8 L/100km / 60.7 mpg US) with CO2 emissions of less than 100 g/km.

To be fair, Audi is the one who produced clones initially, and all of these brands do the same at the moment. so why ppl give a fuss abt Lexus. If u thk this brand is dull and boring so y bother leaving a comment?

HAHAHAH, why even camouflage it? the GS, ES, LS look IDENTICAL, the is will simply be a smaller version. ............ In the words of top gear "lexus vehicles are impeccably made to achieve unmatched levels of DULLNESS"".... Hands down most boring luxury brand out there, with toyota quality interiors.

Some like it and some don't. I am not a Beemer fan but do quite like Lexuses. It's a bonus that now they drive just as well as their Euro counterparts. As they tend to say: Variety is the very spice of life!

Peter James is right...the current reviews from Automobile Magazines & Media while giving Lexus credit for making the cars more engaging have also stated that this car is inferior to MB/BMW/Audi. I think Grave must be a Lexus fan but really why buy an over-priced Toyota? Also Murcielago2006 posted that he was cross-shopping a MB C350 with most options here is about $65K) Where are you shopping ? A C63 AMG was perhaps that price but not a standard MB C350.

Yup I know that and it doesn't make sense, but a Merc here in Canada costs on average 10 - 15K more than the US, check the MB Canadian site and see for yourself.

Agreed, when I was car shopping a few years back I drove the Lexus IS, Audi A5, BMW 3-Series and Mercedes C class and while the Lexus was nice it felt boring, as if I was completely disconnected from the car. The Merc just didn't feel like it's worth the money (fully equipped C350 with most options here is about $65K) it was overpriced basically. Not a BMW fan but I drove it and was blown away with the performance, it was just as expensive as the Merc you can see and feel the money you put into it...but of course the Audi was easily the winner.

All test magazines and reviewers who drove the new ES, GS and LS admitted that they are great cars and Lexus has fixed all the problems in the previous ganerations. Motor Trend compared the GS350 with A6 3.0T and 535 and they said the GS was the better car. So expect the new IS to be a serious 3 series fighter.
