C55 AMG ?

The flagship AMG version of the new C-Class has been spied by our photographers.

While the current model has a 6.3-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine, its replacement could get the twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8. This M157 engine is available in various other AMG models and has an exact displacement of 5461cc with a bore of 98mm and a stroke of 90.5mm. In the C63 AMG, this will probably be offered in the 525 hp (391 kW) version.

The images depict a prototype but we already can tell that it will get wider bumpers and wheel arches, along with the familiar AMG wheels and larger air intakes.

Why would you find a 5.5 TT so hard to believe? The engine has been around for long enough now and the C63 is a V8 class. Becoming a v6 class would lose the buyer looking for that class, and a 4.0 liter on the other hand compared to a 5.5 TT? I know what I would rather be driving!!

I find it so funny with all these website that pretends to know all the "details" on these upcoming models. I would bet my house that this car will not get the 5.5 twin turbo. It's just too heavy, and with the emphasis now on weight and efficiency, a twin turbo V6 or even a new and lighter 4.0 V8 is more plausible, bearing in mind that MB is already getting over 350 hp from the turbo 2.0 in the new A45 amg.

Don't get me wrong, I love AMG. But their focus has never really been on agility... rather power and drama. A 5.5 is still smaller and lighter than the 6.2 it replaces. It will also be cheaper to put in the existing 5.5 (probably tuned down to under 500bhp... 525 quoted here seems too much) than developing a new 4.0.
