Sebastian Vettel on Sunday won his third consecutive drivers' world championship.

After an epic finale to the 2012 calendar in Brazil, Red Bull's Vettel finished off the podium but 3 points ahead of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

It was a tumultuous race for the sport's new and youngest-ever triple title winner, as he carried to the chequered flag hefty damage from a first lap spin and crash through stop-start rain, and radio and pitstop problems.

"We're all absolutely shattered," team boss Christian Horner exclaimed to British television Sky.

"I've aged about 15 years!"

With Vettel's celebrations occuring elsewhere, it was a strangely sombre affair on the podium, as the glassy-eyed Spaniard Alonso rued his championship defeat, and an emotional Felipe Massa fought back tears as he stood before crying Ferrari mechanics.

"When you do something with your heart and do it 100 per cent, you have to be proud of yourself and your team and we'll try again next year," said Alonso.

Triple world champion Nelson Piquet said on the podium that Interlagos 2012 was "the most exciting race I've ever seen in formula one".

Don't know how you guys gets angry whent somebody comment that Vettel is the best driver. He did an awesome job during the whole season. And a fantastic last race, even when he was at the last place on opposite direction, with an stupid mistake by the RB team, Hulkenberg crashed Hamilton, etc. Alonso did a fantastic job, proobing that he's probably the best driver with Hamilton. But Vettel did it great!

What we didn't hear on Kimi's radio, "Kimi, don't go that way..." "Leave me alone, I know where I'm going!"

it is pretty clear that right now alonso and vettel are the better drivers. hamilton is self-destructive and not stable, raikkonen is always competitive but his best years have passed and button and webber are obviously not in the same league with the other "top" drivers. in fact i wonder whether they deserve driving such good cars. and of course the other drivers and teams do not exist. vettel was in the last place, had all the bad luck and managed to finish 6th. alonso had been doing this for the whole season. it's these 2 and then chaos.

No matter which driver we support, Alonso was the more worthy driver for the title this year. He was fast and consistent in an inferior car. I was impressed. Ole!!!

Congrats Vettel..Absolutely the best driver in the world hands down and a worthy World Champion. The guy had almost every thing that could go wrong an still secured the necessary points. So glad cheating Ferrari didn't have it their way with all the clear cheating and instruction to poor Massa to keep conceding position to whining crying baby Alonso.... How good it is when the right person wins...:D

When you have to fight against 2 red bulls, 2 toro rosso, 2 renaults and schumi... With one inferior car and only your teammate helping you...you need a miracle if you want to win. For me he almost did it today... As A.Senna said.."every season there is a winner, but not every season there is a champion..." congratulations Mr Vettle or I would better say.. Mr Neway. Thank you so much to Fernando Alonso...once again a CHAMPION

i agree with the schumi situation but in terms of whose the best driver i dont. i believe alonso is one of the best, but if he was the best out there he wouldve motivated his team just like schumi did with ferrari back in the days...

Hulkenburg said "HULK SMASH" to hamilton. And the best part of the race was when kimi took a detour out of the track

For me, it looks like Michael let pass Sebastian just to take driver's title, shame. But i think Fernando Alonso is still the best driver out there & hopes he takes another title next year.
