Could have 600 hp (447 kW)

Rumors of a BMW M1 successor have been swirling ever since the company introduced the M1 Hommage concept at the 2008 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, but a new report is indicating the automaker will finally launch a supercar in 2016.

Designed to celebrate the company's 100th anniversary, the production model will reportedly adopt the M8 moniker instead of the iconic M1 name. Little else is known about the car but it could ride on a modified version of the carbon fiber and aluminum architecture that underpins the i8. This would help to spread out development costs as well as enable the model to be relatively lightweight.

Performance specifications remain a mystery, but the supercar would reportedly produce 600 hp (447 kW).

As long as there's R8 and SLS, trust me there will be M8. The battle for supremacy needs to be taken to the very top.

Not to be confused with the M80 tank. Significant ground breaking lightweight built/material must flow in this project and a honey of a mid-engine. Where do I sign on the dotted line?

I have a solution. Forget about that retired old azz M1. It was good in its day, now move on. Since BMW already already F'd up by turning the 1 series M into a Subaru WRX hatchback, and neutering their cars, what do they really have to lose. Ressurect the 850 name and fit this car with the current M6 engine tuned to around 600hp. The production costs are cut even further by going this route. Build the car to accomodate the twin turbo V12 in the 760Li, and within about a year after launch of the base car they should release the 860csi with the V12 tuned to about 700hp with some sort of lithium ion battery hybrid KERS system. Let it compete with SLS AMG Black Series and Aventador. Either way, this car should be born an M car and it should recapture the whole "ultimate driving machine" image BMW once had. It shouldnt feel like a ipod on wheels, but like a well controlled supercar something along the lines of the R8 V10.

The likelihood of there being an "M8" in this time fame if at all is very, very slim. However, what we are likely to see by 2016 is a new Z8 which would be a "true" M Car, in that the guys at the M division would develop it from the ground up. I think that every time this rumour surfaces; people & some car enthusiast's are forgetting that in BMW's eyes making an M1 successor would be very difficult to make a profit from and has no scalability across platforms.

This rumor has been alive forever, but judging by BMW's design direction these days, refering to the new 3 series and 6 series if they make it it will be a great car for-sure but 447KW is too little. Another...I wonder about the price tag, with the M5 having almost the same price tag as the R8(and obviously the coming M3 as well),half of the SLS cost, pretty sure its really going to be out of reach for most this one!

2016? Seriously? 4 years? BMW will scrap it and it'll never launch.. just like every other decent modern supercar they've tried to make. Most disappointing brand ever.

Guys, i still love the first/only generation Z8 roadster, ild love to see that return as well. The Turbo 4.4L V8 in the M5 would be a solid engine choice, just as the 4.0L V8 NA was a good fit in the actual Z8 way back when. Sorry for being a bit off topic.

Yahooo.....at last my life long dream of a proper BMW Supercar is about to come true... I just hope it's either: 1. V8 Twin Turbo - Front Longitudinal RWD or 4WD (Classic) Layout 2. V8 Twin Turbo - Mid Longitudinal RWD or 4WD Layout 3. Serial Hybrid - Front Longitudinal Range Extender with RWD or 4WD In-Wheel Electric Motors Layout... I just hope it looks the White M1 Artist Rendering.
