The world needs another luxury crossover as much as it needs another untalented pop star, but that hasn't stopped Audi from reportedly green-lighting the Q8.
According to Car Magazine, the Q8 will be a luxurious new crossover that features four-door coupe styling. Little is known about the model, but it has reportedly been shown at marketing clinics where it has received rave reviews. The response was so overwhelming that Audi apparently raised their production forecast to 25,000 units annually.
The crossover will likely ride on the long-wheelbase version of the MLB platform that will underpin the next-generation Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg. Thanks to its aluminum-intensive architecture, the model could weigh 300 kg (661 lbs) less than the current Q7.
A variety of V6 and V8 engines are expected as well as a plug-in hybrid variant and possibly a high-performance RS model with 550 bhp (410 kW).
Despite being approved for production, the Q8 isn't expected to be launched until 2017.
