Ford GT sets 283 mph Guinness World Record for top speed [video]

Guinness World Record for top speed in a street-legal car.

A custom Ford GT has managed to hit 283.232 mph (455.82 km/h) in a standing mile at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center on NASA’s Shuttle Landing Facility runway.

Created by Performance Power Racing, this heavily modified street-legal Ford GT features two turbos and various components made from “pandalloy”. This is an aerospace aluminum alloy developed in collaboration with Pratt & Whitney which is perfect for racing applications thanks to characteristics like reduced weight, high strength and temperature resistance.

Pumping out 1,700 hp (1267 kW), this Ford GT has set the Guinness World Record for top speed in a street-legal car by reaching a Tag Heuer-measured 283.232 mph in 5,280 feet (1,609 meters).

West Palm Beach, FL – October 16th 2012 –Performance Power Racing Re-Sets the Guinness World Records holding for Fastest Standing Mile-Street Car at 283.232 mph

Johnny Bohmer Owner of Performance Power Racing and Driver of the World Famous BADD GT, along with Matt Lundy, Lead Design Tech, piloted the 1700+ horse power Ford GT down NASA’s Shuttle Landing Facility Runway this week setting a new Guinness World Record at 283.232 mph in the Standing Mile. The Standing Mile is an event in which a vehicle, from a dead stop, accelerates completely through the one mile mark.

“Automotive Racing is the perfect channel to introduce some of the new technologies we are working on in to the main stream market. The Pandalloy™ Aluminum Alloys Project through Performance Power Materials, Inc is very exciting. The multiple series of Aluminums are vastly outperforming what is on the market today and we are excited to see how far we can push the limits of performance, and more importantly efficiency to have a positive impact worldwide. We break records to prove that these systems and designs really do function and can be implemented on vehicles of all types.” said Johnny Bohmer.

Performance Power Racing is a West Palm Beach based Research and Development Company working directly with Pratt & Whitney on a new high specific strength, high temperature tolerant, Aluminum Alloy branded Pandalloy™. Performance Power has successfully transitioned and implemented Aerospace Technology in to the Automotive World. Parts were specifically designed and manufactured out of Pandalloy™ Aluminum Alloys for the World Record Setting Ford GT. Performance Power successfully proved that Aerospace Technology can be effectively used to lower emissions, increase fuel economy, and lower a vehicles carbon footprint through their performance testing at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Shuttle Landing Facility.

“Our entire team has worked very hard to get here and we are proud to be able to put an American car in the record books as the fastest street car in the world.” Mr. Bohmer said about the achievement. “By NASA allowing us access to a one of a kind facility, we are given the opportunity to explore these technologies and share their benefits. An immense amount of research and development went in to this 3 year project and we are just scratching the surface of where these systems can be utilized outside of the racing arena.”

yep its cool because its fast. " that's it " what else has it got, like most American cars its cheap, got a rear suspension probably made from leafe springs, cheap tacky plastic interior, oh hold up bloody hell its got a manual gear stick!!!!! do u americans know how to use this thing??? anyway... it corners like an arrow and the body styling is far from the style of a Ferrari, talking of which compare ur crap to what racing heritage Ferrari has. id have a ferrari 250 gt over a muscle car anyday, go on now n tell me a Ferrari gt250 isn't better part frm speed???

its funny how kids comment bugatti, when they see a fast american muscle car, the europeans got no a chance up against american mscle before a fairlure at those speeds and in such a short run, the american super cars are way cheaper and much more durable engines and the beauty of it , this engines aren even dohc or multivales eather , you need to go simple to be resistent and durable to achive those speeds , there are some lambos but its way too expencive to get them there + it all comes to status , brand name etc etc in other words sensless, reasons for those overpriced cars, no big deal and then they dont last , they have too many muving parts, and the american engines are the best at straight line any way,and can handle craizy amount of hp, something the european engines cry for

By production car you know the 1 they hold the record for only 30 were produced and none were sold. Not a production car imo just a loophole.

It is probably not hard for Bugatti, this is a tuned car, that has all the maintenance that tuned cars have and all the little problems they usually have. A Veyron is a car to be used everyday, if they tune one of them would beat this car easely

plus, Bugatti can't afford to sell a car without ac, good stereo, leather and other luxury things rich people want in their car. That adds to the weight. I wish they do a one-off car to prove all you haters they can do it... Plus, i wonder how many miles that Ford would go before catching fire or broke in other way...

Good point, although I doubt that people who buy exotics drive them everyday since maintenance is not cheap and more common than anything half-way practical.
