2014 / 2015 BMW X5 M spied at the Nurburgring [video]

Looks pretty promising

The next-generation BMW X5 M has been spied on the Nürburgring.

Set to go on sale as a 2014 or 2015 model, the heavily camouflaged prototype looks pretty composed as it tackles the curves of Germany's famous track. It's hard to discern styling details but we can see the model will have aggressive bumpers, a tailgate-mounted spoiler and a four-tailpipe exhaust system.

Power will likely be provided by the company's twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8. It remains unclear it will have an increased output, but the engine currently develops 555 HP (408 kW) and 680 Nm (502 lb-ft) of torque.

Even if the engine remains untouched, the X5 M should be faster than its predecessor thanks to its new platform which is internally known as "X for All." Boasting lightweight materials, the platform could allow for weight savings of up to 150 kg (331 lbs).

Put the X5M, the X6M, the M3 and the M5 on the track at the same time and see how far back the X5/6 trail behind the M3/5.

do you know that the M3 is a coupe or cabrio so a sports car, the M5 a sedan and the X5/X6 SUV/SAV's ? there are aerodynamics and weights that do count unfortunately. So what you are saying is right but the comparison is not realistic

Shumy, that's kind of my point. What's the point of BMW's M division? Isn't it to make great handling performance cars? Could the money spent on the X5/X6s have been better used in reducing the weight of the M5 perhaps and improving the steering? Really, what's the point of a "racing" SUV?

tazcubed, having that much performance on such a big car and still being able to control it easily is a kind of sucess. I have driven the range sport and range rover vogue many times and I have the x6m, the range's are like from another universe even tough they only have 280-360hp's. twice as much horsepower and twice easier handling. I see this as a success. bmw should also spend money and smoke all the other SUV's trying to compete with time in terms of performance figures, M5 is not all. my opinion though...

As much as they are trying to market the X5 as a handler, the high center of gravity cannot eliminate physics with the marketing stunt at the Nurburgring. I am more gullible to believe the X6 being able to handle like a racer!
