Could have an extra 100 lb-ft of torque

According to a recent report, the 2014 BMW M3 will be lighter and more powerful than its predecessor.

Citing a "trusty source," Bimmer Post is reporting the sedan will have a turbocharged six-cylinder engine with less than 450 hp (335 kW).  This falls below original expectations, but their source says it will develop approximately 395 lb-ft (535 Nm) of torque - an increase of 100 lb-ft (135 Nm).

More importantly, the car is reportedly being developed to tip the scales at roughly 3,415 lbs (1549 kg). If this pans out, the model would weigh around 300 lbs (136 kg) less than its predecessor.

An M3 concept could be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, so expect to learn more details early next year.

Apparently they are targeting the weight of the E46 M3 which is a reasonable enough target with the extra torque this new engine should provide. I just can't help but think BMW should target +/- 1200kg's for a truely spectacular machine. Then again the M3 CSL is one of BMW's finest ever sports cars and a lightweight version of the upcoming M3/M4 would certainly give it even better performance. That extra 120NM torque would work wonders in a lightweight package.

1200kg means it should have CF chassis and body which will make it cost +$100k

not necessarily. With extensive use of aluminium in chassis, body panels and with lighter various parts they can possibly aim for the weight of under 1350 kgs for next generations

A turbocharged engine? So no tri-turbo? Still it has less torque than the brilliant N/A 6.2 AMG. But at 1550kg this is gonna be a murderer
