Chevrolet COPO Camaro does the quarter-mile in 8.88 seconds [video]

A Chevrolet COPO Camaro does the quarter-mile in 8.88 seconds.

One of the most impressive quarter-mile performances we've seen lately was achieved by this Chevrolet COPO Camaro. The vehicle is motivated by a 327 cu in 5.3-liter V8 engine along with a 4.0-liter Whipple supercharger that allowed the car to do the quarter-mile in 8.88 seconds, without any other modifications.

Chevrolet previously mentioned that the recently introduced COPO Camaro is capable of doing the quarter-mile in less than 9 seconds, and now we have proof that it can do it.

There are other engine choices available for this model, including a naturally-aspirated V8 7.0-liter and another 5.3-liter V8 with a 2.9-liter supercharger. All three engines are mated to a Powerglide automatic gearbox that was specially developed for drag racing.

Available with a choice of five colors (Ashen Grey Metallic, Silver Ice Metallic, Victory Red, Summit White and Flat Black), the automaker plans on making only 69 units this year, with prices starting from $89,000. Deliveries have already started earlier this week.

$89,000 to only go fast in a straight line. Its 2012 and this one-note wonder idea is still impressive?

It's a purpose built drag race car with a limited production of 69 units. Not street legal, no vin #, full rollcage drag race car. Nobody can buy one anymore because they are already sold, and the people who bought them will tow them to the dragstrip and drag race. Why should it do anything else, so yes it is a one-note wonder, and it does that note very well.

Chevy is late to the game again.

Lets take the supercharger off and see what happens. The Challenger dragpack did it in 9.43 with natural aspirated Hemi. Very quick time but I just don't get excited about anything Chevy does.

Wrong! The Challenger dragpack ran a 9.43 with a 8.4L V10 from the Viper. This camaro has 3 different engine choices that can all be swapped out in less than 1 hour to compete in multiple classes. The 7.0L would be the better selection for an apples to apples comparison being it is naturally aspirated as well but still it's 2cyl and 1.4L less.

I stand corrected. You are right about the V10. With that said, the Camaro is still a cartoon on wheels.
