 Maybach officially discontinued
Maybach Edition 125! 14.09.2011

Brand won't offer 2013 models

Daimler AG reportedly decided to axe Maybach in November of 2011, but the company has remained tight-lipped about the brand's colossal failure.

The silence ended today as Mercedes officially confirmed all Maybach models will be discontinued for the 2013 model year. The news was so inevitable that the company didn't issue a press release or statement, but rather a price list which has "Discontinued" next to all five models.

Mercedes had hoped to rejuvenate Maybach but a proposed partnership with Aston Martin was rejected over cost issues. This effectively sealed the brand's fate and forced the company to slap a $100,000 (€80,965 / £63,750) rebate on their lineup to clear excess inventory.

How about just bad timing? It was introduced just before the dot-com bust. And the 2008 "economic correction" has made flash less fashionable.

Hmm great news! Should be very cheap to pick one up in the 2nd hand market.

Inspired concept badly executed. This was Mercedes's perfect Rolls-Royce/Bentley riposte, but in terms of visual aesthetics, it failed woefully. The only chance at redemption, the Batmobile that was the Exelero Biturbo V12 Coupe Concept, was missed as it never reached production. Also, the 'stretched S-Class' taunts didn't help the Maybach's cause either since there was virtually no originality in the exterior and interior designs. Such a waste of resources.

I'm really sad to see Maybach go. After all it is superior to RR Phantom in every area conceivable. It only lacks that special (show off) character on the outside. That's where Phantom is something special. Otherwise Maybach is a fantastic Mercedes Benz overengineered product. Maybach is better in ride comfort, interior gadgets, better equipped, faster etc. On the other hand Phantom is very Spartan, no seat heating, cooling, massage, the rear seats look like leather park bench, whereas in Maybach you get two adjustable armchairs. I guess it was the understated character that millionaires didn't like. This is pure illuminati car, for those who don't want to stand out (as much). I saw 57S two days ago and its pure first class elegant car. As a car enthusiast I would choose Maybach over RR, just the way I would any Benz over bmw.

Both interior and exterior looked like a pimped up old S-class. And the technology was also based on an old S-class. No wonder it failed. People want something unique, especially in this price range.

I think it could've worked but it just wasn't special enough and was far too ugly.

Mercedes should stick to its core competence - making high quality mid-market premium cars; as an alternative to sport-biased BMWs.
