 Alfa Romeo Spider details surface
Pininfarina Alfa Romeo 2uettottanta Concept

Mazda and Fiat announced earlier this year they would collaborate on development for a new roadster/spider based on the next generation Mazda MX-5 Miata platform. Further rumors have now arrived courtesy of Car & Driver which adds a little more substance to the Alfa side of the project.

The US-based magazine appears convinced the Alfa Romeo Spider will be called the Duetto. It will be powered by a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that will produce around 250hp (186kW/253PS). Transmission options will include a standard six-speed manual as well as an optional paddle-shift operated seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

With the use of lightweight aluminium materials, Alfa are also targeting a kerb weight that will not exceed 2300 pounds (1043kg).

The design is still open to speculation. Previous rumors have stated the Pininfarina Alfa Romeo 2uettottanta Concept (pictured) that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier strongly hints at the styling direction.

We expect to see the world debut of the new Duetto/Spider sometime during 2014 before production begins in 2015.

Would be healthier if Alfa stayed away from VW. I was initially intrigued by the idea but then think what VW have done to Seat..?? On the surface, a deal with Mazda is the best thing Alfa have done since the 90s. A tie-in with Mazda/Nissan/Honda on other cars might just put Alfa where she belongs...

If you call it Duetto, give it at least the boat tail of the `66 original.

As usual, Alfas look great, and having a Mazda platform is not a bad idea. If this model´s reliability is good (believe me, I have been taken for a ride by Alfa)then , maybe it can be a top-seller.

Bloody hell, 235bhp is quite a jump over previous MX-5s! Especially as it'll only weigh a tonne or so. That'll be cool.

Great looking car especially if the price is right. With the low weight should have plenty of power and handling

Why not? I mean, they are workin, are they not? I don see much wrong with the Lambos, the Bugatti, or the bentleys. And don't even give me the "thats Audi's" coz they are all owned by the same company, so its all the same, really...

This brand is rotting under Marchionne. He should just sell it to Piëch. I want to see something like the Pandion on the road. Or a Brera that isn't on a compromised platform.
