Lexus LF-LC also an option

BMW and Toyota recently announced plans to jointly-develop a sports car and new details are starting to emerge about the mysterious model.

According to a BMW spokesperson, the car won't be based on the Toyota 86, Subaru BRZ or Scion FR-S. She added, it "will be a sustainable sports car with environmentally friendly technology" and "we are developing the architecture and components for this future car."

That's pretty vague, but a BMW manager commented "Anything is possible. The key factor is that the products of both companies retain their own individual character, despite jointly developed technologies."

It still remains unclear what the model will be, but speculation has suggested it could be a Toyota Supra successor or a production version of the Lexus LF-LC concept. The model could borrow some technology from the BMW i8, but nothing is official as of yet.

I respect Toyota for wanting to make a sports car but teaming up with BMW dents Toyota's racing heritage. 'Oh, we have a new Supra and it's good, btw we made it with BMW.' WTF?

Think this proves the point that Toyota cannot build sports cars without a Lotus successor. My favouite was the original MR2. Think Toyota should have gone into F1 with Lotus partnership; they would have fared much better...

Please stick into just developing fuel sills. the idea of a toyo-bemer is going to end just like Daimler Chrysler "a benefit of one over the other"

If LF-A is not an attestment that Toyota can build sports cars, you guys are kidding yourselves. By the way Yamaha is owned by Toyota, so it is in the same corporate umbrella. When its engineering staff is overflowed with work, it farms out work to Yamaha just like it requested it to build the LF-A engine as well as the engine for the Volvo XC-90. I can see Toyota can benefit from BMW in the way a car is set-up and perhaps build cars away from its conservative Buick-like while BMW can benefit from Toyota's corporate parts suppliers since its obvious BMW suppliers are suffering from lack of quality control.

honestly, i dosen't like very much this partnership becouse i love Toyota, but i dont like very much the germans cars... but this could be a good thing for Toyota. BMW are konw as terrific good handling cars. combined wiht Toyota efficient and performant non turbo engines (and eventualy hybrid sistem) this cold be the origin off the most amazing Supra of all time!! a decent anti GT-R car... I say, lets wait and see if Toyota does it right...

I useally don't get excited when carcompanies go and share their technologie. And this is no exception. As far as can see the only bebnefit for toyota is that it wil be cheaper this way. But I'm sure toyota can build a great sportscar on their one. I mean look at all the old supras. As long as it's not electric nor hybrid actually

so shame on toyota, why it doesn't make a new supra or any project by itself !!! there is no mind that toyota cooperation with BMW but it supposed that cooperation made a something 50 to 50 to each company not to let one of the companies lead everything, specially supra it's a legend from toyota.

You can say what you want... the FR-S, GT 86, 86 BR-Z...it's a fantastic car... a drivers car... I am looking forward to the final product of this collaboration... Maybe, just maybe...it will have an I6 engine. yes the 2jz was regard as one of the best, but that's old school... it wont be a supra without the I6!!!

Why don't they just independently make a new Supra?

I won't go into how anyone who says Toyota CAN'T produce a "true" sport car incompletely wrong and idiotic. People have already proven that for me. However, people should note why these collaborations take place. COST!!! Cost of production will be lower, with the right collaboration. The main reason why Supra didn't continue on was because it was waaaaaayy too far ahead of its time, with a price tag that was already "Lexus Level". Part of the reason why it became the SC300! To solely R&D and develope tech, designing, etc, then build new facilities, or overhaul existing ones, would increase production costs. Then people will say "wow, kudos to Toyota, but I can't afford that!" As for this (partnership) turning into something like Daimler-Chrysler (negatively speaking) is EXTREMELY unlikely. Toyota would never let that happen. Mostly because this is a collaboration. Daimler-Chrysler, Mitsuishi and BMW were all owned under 1 roof, but failed to integrate with each other successfully. However people should recognize the possible benefits. After all Mitsubishi benefitted from borrowed parts and tech, with their Lancer EVO.

Oh, and btw, the FR-S drives fricken AWESOME! It glides through turns with nary a lean! As for Subaru saying they did the bulk of the work is BS. Unless you're talking about final production, after all these cars are coming out of the Subaru plan in Japan. Yes Toyota is using a modified Legacy platform, planned since late 2006 for development. Yes it's a boxer engine. But it was Toots who really brought it all together. As for the boxer engine, it is a newly develop collaboration. Remember that Subaru's traditional 2.0 boxer was roughly a 140hp power plant. And it takes more than just slapping on the D-4 injection system, there's development and trials. But this was enough to turn the engine into a 200hp power plant! Combined with the light weight design, and low center of gravity, there is no other car in it's class and price point that drives as well, wih the same level of value and value retention!
