The success of the X6 SAV has convinced BMW executives to offer a smaller X4 model which will launch in 2014.
Production capacity is targeted to be from 150,000 to 240,000 units per year at BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina plant in the United States.
The X4 will compete with the Land Rover Evoque, Porsche Macan and the upcoming Audi Q6.
The X4 will inherit the X3's range of 4- and 6-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines along with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. It is reported the 8-speed Steptronic trans will also be available.
Out on the horizon BMW's M performance division will prepare an X4 M high performance version.
Although, the exterior design has not been finalized, it is believed the X4 will simply be a smaller X6 and maintain the X6's 2-door coupe-like profile.
