Dutch news site De Telegraaf is reporting an anonymous Porsche engineer has told them turbos will eventually be applied to smaller engines in the model range, but not necessarily with the Turbo badge.

In an effort to make engines more fuel efficient and lower CO2 emissions, turbocharging has become the latest trend amongst auto makers. A prime example is BMW, who for many years vowed against using turbos, but now, new single, twin and even tri-turbocharged systems are found throughout their model range.

For Porsche, the Turbo moniker is currently reserved for top performance models such as the 911, Panamera or Cayenne. However, the Porsche engineer says a four-cylinder boxer engine with a turbo is conceivable, while this notion also raises the question of a turbocharged Carrera and Carrera S.

The last time Porsche used a four-cylinder turbo was for the 968 which ended production in 1995.

When questioned about a 911 Hybrid the Porsche engineer responded, "As of yet we have no hybrid version of the 911 planned purely because of the extra weight that the technology brings. But, never say never. The required technology is in-house, as seen with the hybrid versions of the Panamera and Cayenne, and the platform is suitable for the powertrain."

Special thanks to Luis Baston of Kane Design for the Boxster rendering!

I understand if they make turbocharged boxsters and caymans WITH NO BADGE, but the turbocharged carrera and carrera s models are not very logic. There are already 17 different type of 911's for sale right now (without the GT's)...

I like the prospect of having "turbofied" variants for the new Boxster and future Cayman models. But I hope the NA boxers would continue to work their magic for years to come too.
