2013 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG revealed [video]

After dozens of spy photos and speculative artist renders since 2010, Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed the all-new Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG in conjuntion with the launch of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 W03 race car in Spain today. The announcement comes less than two months since the 2013 SL-Class made its world premiere at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG features the familiar M157 twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 engine that produces 530bhp (395 kW / 537 PS). Thanks to the all-aluminum bodyshell and assorted magnesium components the SL's body now weighs 242 pounds (110 kg) lighter than its steel bodied predecessor. The result is a vehicle that achieves greater performance running 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds (4.2 seconds with the AMG Performance Pack) and 30 percent combined fuel consumption savings with 28.5mpg and CO2 emissions at 231g/km compared to 328g/km for the previous generation.

In the videos, the SL63's appearance is brief but comes as no surprise as its front end looks quite similar although just slightly more aggressive than the standard 2013 SL-Class. Its front bumper fascia has larger air intake pockets with LED daytime running lights sitting inside and the grille features an all-new split-wing design. Side skirts are the same as the SL-Class while the rear end with its diffuser and four trapezoidal exhaust tips were revealed in previous spy photos.

Stay tuned as an official media release with more details and photos are expected tomorrow.

I have always loved the SL and I have had one in the past but a friend came over with his Porsche Panamera 4S and there is no comparison. The Porsche has it,especially with the rear seat being available!

Panamera? How can you compare it with the SL? You want extra seats go for a CLS

Sedan to roadster comparison aside, Porsche is the final Teutonic guardian of the form follows function Bauhaus design ethic. It seems like roadsters should be easy to make beautiful. This generation SL looks like it was designed by different teams across the world who weren't allowed to communicate. MB has had a good long run with the SL, but I'm already looking forward--not just to the refresh--but to it's replacement in another eight years.

The AMG version looks pretty damn good. Although MB truly could have created a more pleasing form for that upper portion of the headlamps which was not the most successful translation of the concept A-Class' stunning headlamps. I guess we'll have to wait the long wait until the next generation of MB uses such a high styling direction featured in the A-Class.

This new SL is still gorgeous. The side profile is pretty sick!

The previous body looked prettier and sportier than this one. There is something wrong with those headlights. They are more and more rounder and ruin the sporty and aggressive look

For the people who said this car doesn't look good just wait until you see it in flesh and i'm sure you will change your mind. This car looks nice, very nice.

i never liked the sl. and i guess that won't change for another 8-10 years..possibly even longer. i am having a hard time figuring out what exactly justifies this car's price tag when everything about it is so similar to the slk. the asymmetrical dash vents and that cheap-looking universal comand dash panel...that sh!t would look out of place on an A-class. really hard to believe that a company who designed the timeless original cls could screw up this bad.

Its ok, decent looking, not horrible nor gorgeous at the same time. Pricing is important though and the comparison between this and the 500 would be worth a look.
