 Peugeot 208 GTi Concept revealed
Peugeot 208 Gti Concept

Following an initial teaser that was released yesterday, Peugeot has released full details and preview images of the brand new 208 GTi Concept that will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on March 6th.

The power source of the concept is the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that has been passed over from the RCZ THP 200. It produces 197 bhp ( 147 kW / 200 PS ) and 275 Nm (203 lb-ft) of torque and is mated with a six-speed manual transmission that should result in a 0-100 kph (0-62 mph) acceleration time of under 7 seconds.

The exterior features some modest updates such as lower bodywork spoilers, sill skirt extensions, a brushed aluminium GTi Concept logo on the grille and quarter panels. It lacks a certain element of aggression that most would like to see considering this is a pre-production concept, but the interior tries to go a little way to satisfying those needs.

The cabin has more high-tech updated look to it with LED backlighting giving an ambient feel to the driver. It is complimented by a flat bottomed red perforated leather steering wheel.

The Peugeot 208 GTi hasn't been officially confirmed for production, but we expect this to be a mere formality once this concept has been unveiled. We expect to see it hit the showrooms before the end of the year.

GTi Concept: The re-generation of a legendary icon
The first sensations are completely visual and evident as soon as the GTi Concept is revealed. Instantly characterised by being the performance icon of the 208, it features chequered-flag motifs that embellish the metal mesh of the grille, and the lower bar proudly affirms its origin by displaying the French ‘Le Tricolour’ flag or the Union Jack when in the UK.

Other distinctive exterior features include: double chromed exhaust tailpipes, aero lower bodywork spoilers and lower sill skirt extensions that all capture the signature badging.  Placed within the grille is the brushed aluminium GTi Concept logo that can also be found on the rear quarter panels, as a salute to its illustrious predecessor - the legendary 205 GTi.

On the inside, the passenger compartment is a true GTi environment, with a characteristic sports leather stitched steering wheel, the treatment of which is replicated on the sides of the gear lever, double stitching in the seats and enhanced with LED backlighting to the surrounds of the high-tech instruments. The sports seats are trimmed with Nappa leather on the outer section, and cloth in the centre with an embossed tartan motif, and a leather head restraint.

The red perforated leather steering wheel continues the check motif, and has a pronounced lower flat section, which carries the GTi Concept logo set in an aluminium ring. To complete the sports interior, the fascia capping is dressed in Alcantara with grey stitching, the roof lining is entirely black and the pedals are aluminium. The centre console architecture and ventilation vents all feature a graduated red to black effect, and the chequered-flag theme is also present on the aluminium door crossbars.

The GTi Concept takes its propulsion from the powerfully-compact RCZ THP 200 engine. Combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox, the 1.6-litre THP engine puts its driver at the controls of a machine that captivates the potential for a great driving experience. Like all 208s, a small steering wheel greets the driver and with the GTi Concept, this accentuates the dynamic capability of this car with the enhanced power available. With the raised instrument panel in line of sight, the information is clearly visible from the dials that have a brushed aluminium background and very precise graduations.

The GTi Concept also benefits from the improvements that characterise the 208, taking full advantage of its compactness and lightness, delivering road-holding that is both excellent and precise.  To enhance the dynamic experience, it has a 36mm wider track, at the front and at the rear, and a rear roof spoiler to generate down force at speed. For optimum braking performance, the GTi Concept is equipped with four discs; 302mm diameter at the front and 249mm at the rear, set off by red-painted brake callipers.

They have ruined this car. When the 206 arrived it was a stunner. It was cheap but it's design was great and it was one of the most beautifull cars in it's time. Every girl liked it. Now it looks like a Citroen C3 that was melted in a oven. They should have evolutionised the design of the 206 not going for this.

Spot on. At its time the 206 was a car to envy, as was the 205 especially in its GTi form. This one looks like a Toyota Yaris.

Hmm... not sure of the busy front with its lines and bulges, but not bad looking from other angles, hope the interior makes to production, and the figures seems good for what it is. Somehow this looks more like a true successor of the 106 and 205 gti, maybe because of the smiling grills of predecessors.

The position of the instrument cluster looks terrible. Why, Peugeot, why?

it's not an LED strip it's metal strip with the word Peugeot engraved on it, the luminosity is due to the light source in front of the car, the badge is similar to the rear one.

Its not beautiful but it looks very cool. Top marks Peugeot for pushing the boat out a bit. Not too much in a way the only Citroen carries off well, but it looks very classy. It looks exotic somewhat and above its ranks. Something the 205 achieved fantastically thus giving it its timeless classic status. In all honestly I don't think the 206 carried this over very well, and certainly not the 207. The 207 GTI was a weak excuse for a hot hatch. Underpowered, overweight and given the hallowed GTI badge on the basis that it had big exhausts. This although I wont expect fantastic dynamics, at least looks the part. A step forward Pug well done.
