At the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, Peugeot are due to unleash to the public their new 208. This will include both the three-door and five-door hatchbacks and they will also be joined by their high performance sibling - the 208 GTi which has been teased here today.

The single teaser image was released on the company's Facebook page and it shows the exhaust tips which boasts a much more aesthetically pleasing design to what we have seen in pre-production prototype spy photos. Perhaps the French manufacturer will start by unveiling a concept version before the production model?

Recent rumors suggest the 208 GTi will be powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that has been sourced from the BMW-owned MINI Cooper S. It generates 184 PS (135 kW / 181 hp) and 240 Nm (177 lb-ft) of torque which should enable the model to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less than seven seconds.

Further down the line, Peugeot may also launch an even more potent model that will be named the 208 GTi Racing (GTi R). It will feature a more powerful powertrain that pumps out around 200 PS (147 kW / 197 hp).

I hope it looks alright because this power level is disappointing. For Christ sake the 1993 Civic EG6 made like 10 Less horsepower and it was a 1.6 WITHOUT a turbo. Peugeot is slacking hard!

What are you talking about? The B16A2 Vtec makes 160hp but only has 111lb-ft of torque. NA engines don't have nearly as much torque as a Turbo'd one, and torque is what counts for acceleration.

How much heavier do you thing the 208 is going to be over the civic? Like 250KG? Torque can only accelerate you so much if your mass as also increased. F=M*A is basic physics and 60 torques extra won't wash away 250kg extra in mass.

An EG6 does 0-60 in 7.2s... obviously the benefit in weight savings wasn't enough to justify the low torque numbers.

I don't understand what you ment in your last post. Anyway in this application the Old Civic SiR is maybe .3 seconds slower to 60mph than the new Peugeot 208. But considering the difference in forced induction this is a joke.

What I meant was even though you're saying 60lb-ft of torque won't wash away 250kg of extra mass, the Peugeot obviously still managed to achieve a better 0-60 time. You have to understand 0.3s faster from 0-60 is actually quite a large improvement. Plus the Peugeot is obviously not going to feel as cheap and barebone inside. Today's crash test regulations also make cars heavier than they were before.

after 205 there was no decent peugeot hot hatch... don't get me wrong, i am the biggest peugeot fan!! i had 206, and now i have 308, and i'm in love! but really they were not even close to renault clio sport... this GTi R version, with 197 hp seems interesting, and i think that will be enough power... i just hope gearbox will be improved...

Wrong the 306 GTI-6 was the last good hot hatch, maybe the 206RC as well.

People claim they are Peugeot fans and always talking about the same old 205...please grow up it's almost 3 decades since the 205 and people have been born and died, it's even scarier that you are nearing your fifties...that's the only way that you could still be young and have driven the 205 in younger days...well some of us grew up in the 106 GTi, 206 Gti and 306 Gti days, go complain and moan to someone who can relate to your 205 Gti heydays story....bring your beloved 205 Gti and race it against a 207 Gti or even a 206 GTi...it was a death trap which is why Peugeot have progressed and made safer cars witch compromised a lot of "good" features of the 205 Gti...thought you'd at least apply logic and understand...at least they are striving towards same driving dynamics....if the 208 drives exactly the same as the 205 it better be called the best Peugeot super-mini ever cause it would be far safer and more kitted. You don't hear Renault people moaning and groaning about the Renault 5 and Clio III. Please lay the 205 legacy to rest...that's like a parent wanting all their children to take after the first born, they are all individuals let them be...thank you...from another Peugeot fan!
