 Jaguar considering a track-focused XKR-S special edition - report
Jaguar XKR-S - 01.03.2011

Could be named after the N?rburgring

The Jaguar XKR-S isn't a slouch, but the company is reportedly considering a track-oriented special edition which could be named after the Nürburgring.

Speaking with Car and Driver, Jaguar's global head of communications said the model would be designed for people who want to take their car to the track and then drive it home.

Little else is known about the vehicle, but it could feature an aerodynamic body kit, a fire-suppression system, racing seats and a roll cage. The rear seats could also be jettisoned to reduce weight and improve performance.

A concept could be introduced later this year, so expect to learn more in the coming months.

Can only imagine what UK Top Gear will say about a quintessential English car company naming a car after a German track.

More likely they'll complain that N?rburgring testing has ruined the ride and that a Jaguar shouldn't be about lap times and such. When they compared the XKR-S to the the 2011 Nissan GT-R they said it was all wrong, and an "XKR-S-S" would only exaggerate the bits they don't like.

So does an E-Type. Doesn't mean it can still cut it.

Bad analogy. The E-type still looks great, but hardly modern enough to fit this decade. The XK looks brilliant AND still could pass as something whose debut was yesterday, or in three years.

What is this, if not a lighter, taughter, track-focused version of the XKR?

You missed the point, it will be a lighter-er, taughter-er, track-focused-er way to get more money off a design that is already 7 uears old. To be followed by more "er" versions until the machinery for building it is obsolete and there are no new parts to keep the assembly line. That way, with some luck, by 3012, we may have a new XK design, which will be released to coincide with the next- gen Aston...

I get the point, but its stupid nevertheless. Instead of doing only more hardcore, track versions of the same car over and over, why don't they vary the lineup, like so: one for pure straightline speed, one for hardcore track performance and lap times, one purpose built for drifting, one for comfort, and one for weather? If they insist on making so many versions, why not make them all different? With car tech the way it is today, all it takes as tweaking the ECU and the differential, except for the weather one which would need AWD. They will probably sell more, and they can advertise the model variations with this slogan: "An XKR for all." Regardless, they can sell it for what they want, considering that they're getting away with 100,000GBP price tag for what the XKR should have been in the first place.

pointless version of a pointless variant (R-S) of what is essentially a GT/Muscle Car not a precision track biased sports car
