The manual inches closer to obscurity

According to a recent report, the 2013 Porsche 911 GT3 could be offered exclusively with a PDK transmission.

Speaking with Inside Line, August Achleitner - the 911's project chief - said the company is currently testing manual and PDK transmissions on GT3 prototypes, but only one will be offered on the production model. However, it seems like the PDK is a shoe-in as Achleitner noted "When we launched the 911 Turbo S, we did not offer a manual, but we have not had a single complaint."

Regardless of which transmission is offered, Achleitner confirmed the next-generation GT2 and GT3 will have an electromechanical steering system. It has received some flack for not offering a lot of feedback, but Achleitner said "All our race drivers prefer it."

GT3 = Drivers car and Turbo = Grand Tourer (albeit very fast one)...different customer segment...so there's still hope to retain the manual tranny yet?

gt2 didn't sell well in US because it was only available with a manual transmission. by the way Turbo's lap time is faster than the GT3, and I don't know if you ever have driven one but it is not a long distance car. the drivers car is gt3rs or gt2rs and they only come with manual transmission so you are right

If this is the case, then the 991-gen GT3 would become a softer driver's sports car than its predecessor the 997. But I think Porsche owners and race drivers would commend on such a move as such a tranny would increase practicality in changing gears. But then again, isn't the GT3 a driver's sports car?

PDK is incredible! If you're talking about track times and overall track experience. It'll shave more than just a second from your lap time, it will make the lap much better by letting the driver focus on lines, braking points, always having two hands at the wheel. I love 5 speeds too, but the GT3 is a track oriented car, I saw this coming. Ferrari only offers similar trannies in their Stradale/Scuderia line up. They'll probably offer 5 speeds on the Turbo, Turbo Cab
